Student wins top prize

CHAMPION — Stephen Bada, 18, a senior at the Trumbull Career Technical Center from McDonald, won the top prize for a video he produced in a national competition in Reno, Nev.

Bada’s video was awarded first place for digital media production by the Business Professionals of America, a national student organization. John Bagnola, interactive multimedia teacher at TCTC, said the winning video was a three-minute “infomercial” for the organization’s National Leadership Conference on motivating students to compete at the national level.

Bada plans to attend Youngstown State University.

Free drop and shop

LAKE MILTON — Craig Beach fire station, 1797 Grandview Drive, will accept old or unwanted household items at a free drop and shop event, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, sponsored by YSU re:CREATE.

This environmental friendly event will take any usable and working, non hazardous household items. Items such as clothing, toys, kitchen items, luggage and tableware are all acceptable. Auto parts, scrap metal, computers and other hazardous items should not be dropped at the station.

Scrap tire drop-off

HOWLAND — The township will conduct a scrap tire drop-off June 2-6 and June 9-13 for township residents.

A maximum of eight rim-free passenger tires can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the public works department, 3600 N. River Road. Those with questions should call the township at (330) 856-4037.

Zoning board meeting

NEW MIDDLETOWN — The village zoning board will meet at 7 p.m. June 12 at the Municipal Building, 10711 Main St., to discuss a sign variance for the Mid Toll Inc., 10449 Main St.

Historical summer camp

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is offering “History on Stage,” a summer camp for children ages 7-12. The program will be 10 a.m. to noon June 16-19 at the Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave. Participants will create, produce, direct and star in a mini-drama based on the historic diary of a local pioneer woman.

Activities will include historic games, crafts and prop-making. Family and friends will be invited for a performance on the last day of the camp. The cost of the camp is $18 for MHVS members and $20 for non-members. This includes a camp T-shirt. To register, call (330) 743-2589.

Committee recruiting

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The city is looking for residents to serve on the new Cascade Park Development Committee.

The purpose of the committee is to work as a foundation to raise money for the park and to organize events.

Interested residents should send resumes to the city clerk at the City Building, 230 North Jefferson St., by June 23.

A resident from each of the city’s eight wards, two council members and a representative from the city administration will be appointed to serve on the committee.

A similar committee of volunteer citizens, independent of city government, disbanded about two years ago because of a lack of interest, officials said. More information is available by calling (724) 656-3515.

Duck race fundraiser

NORTH LIMA — The annual duck race by Potential Development and Help Hotline Crisis Center will be held at Pine Lake in North Lima on Saturday. The duck race is a fund-raising event for both operations.

Potential Development provides programs for preschool and school-aged children with developmental delays, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and challenging behaviors. Help Hotline Crisis Center is a resource and crisis center for area residents that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Tickets for the event cost $5 and will be on sale until Friday. Corporate ducks may also be purchased for a $50 tax-deductible donation. The race is set to begin at noon on Saturday.
