Man killed, mother injured during fire

staff report

SALINEVILLE — A man was killed and his mother was injured while trying to rescue him during a fire at the man’s home.

Highlandtown Fire Department Chief Tim Roush said the fire broke out at 7:03 a.m. Saturday at 37654 state Route 39.

The fire is still under investigation, said Shane Cartmill, a spokesman for the state fire marshal’s office.

Cartmill said the man who died was a paraplegic who was unable to escape the blaze. His mother, who lived nearby, was burned while trying to rescue him and was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital, Cartmill said. He did not know which hospital, and he did not know the extent of the woman’s injuries.

He did not have names to release.
