Golf scramble will benefit Mercer County Hall of Fame


The Mercer County Hall of Fame sponsors a golf scramble to help with the funding of the Tom Burns Memorial Award, which is a scholarship for academic and athletic excellence to a boy and girl from each of the 13 high schools in Mercer County.

This year’s tournament will be held June 25 at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in West Middlesex. According to Denny Eckles, golf committee chairman, the event will be a four-person scramble beginning at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start.

There will be a prize list of over $4,000 based on a full field of 32 teams. Eckles is looking for teams and hole sponsors. The cost to enter is $260 per team or $65 per player. Entry fees include golf, cart, chicken dinner, beverages, golf balls, and a golf towel, plus the opportunity to win a number of prizes. There will also be a cash skins game at $20 per team and a 50-50 drawing. The cost of a hole sponsorship is $50.

Players and teams should forward their check to Tam O’Shanter Golf Course. For hole sponsors, a check should be made payable to Mercer County Hall of Fa+++me and be forwarded, along with a completed hole sponsor form, to Denny Eckles, 23 Canal St., Greenville, Pa., by June 10.

The late Eddie McCluskey, the legendary basketball coach at Farrell High School, will be inducted into the WPIAL Hall of Fame June 20 in a ceremony at the Embassy Suites in Moon. McCluskey holds the WPIAL record with 11 district championships.

Joining McCluskey are Chuck Klausing, who led General Braddock’s football team to six straight WPIAL titles from 1954-59, and Norwin High’s Sheron Watson, who led the girls volleyball team to 15 WPIAL titles and 12 state crowns.

The athletes being inducted are Dick Groat, Swissville; Don Hennon, Wampum; Ron James, New Brighton; Norm Van Lier, Midland; Colleen Rosensteel, Greensburg Central Catholic, and Candy Young, Beaver Falls.

The 1967 Ambridge basketball team, which featured Denny Wuycik and was coached by Dick Venzio that posted a perfect 27-0 season, will be inducted, along with the 1945 Donora football team and the 1985 Shaler baseball team. The lone official being inducted is Cliff Fair and the contributor is former WPIAL executive director Larry Hanley.

The 2008 Mercer County Senior Games will be June 7-13. Locations include Greenville Senior Community Center, Grove City Senior Community Center, McQuiston Center by the Park (Sandy Lake) and Shenango Valley Senior Community Center.

The Senior Games are open to men and women age 50 and older. Competitions are bowling, basketball, golf, horseshoes, racquetball, shuffleboard and track and field.
