Lakeview High hirings

CORTLAND — The Lakeview Local Board of Education recently hired several coaches:

George Lanterman will serve as boys varsity basketball coach, while Dave Konczal will coach for the girls.

Nate Mailach will work as head varsity soccer coach for the boys, while Shawn Varley will be varsity girls coach.

Diane Neighbarger will coach varsity girls track as well as girls cross country, while Sean Voorhies will coach boys cross country.

Ridge board moves

MINERAL RIDGE—The Weathersfield school board has approved the following supplemental contracts for sports positions for the 2008 to 2009 school year: Randy Cameron, athletic director; Darren Garris, aAssistant athletic director; Joe Yaksich, varsity bowling coach;Ron Toth, varsity boys’ track coach; Matt Blair, freshman football coach and Denver Goodman, freshman football.

Crestwood defeats Southeast, 5-4

RAVENNA — Eric Stuart socked two home runs and had five RBIs as the Crestwood High baseball team defeated Southeast, 5-4. Stuart (5-2) also pitched a six-hitter to lead Crestwood (13-1).

Greg Lemley rapped a pair of doubles for Southeast while Brent Ford added a single and two RBIs.

Southeast wins in softball

RAVENNA — Shannon Hamilton (17-1) pitched a five-hitter as the Southeast High softball team defeated Crestwood, 10-4.

Ali Austin slugged a three-run homer to lead Southeast (22-5), while Danielle Kaley had four singles and Payden Boston a double and single.

Lisa Light rapped a homer for Crestwood (15-9, 8-5).

WoO at Tri-City slated for SPEED

FRANKLIN, Pa. — World of Outlaws Late Model Series and SPEED officials recently announced that the 2008 Oil Region Labor Day Classic weekend event at Tri-City Speedway on Aug. 31 will be televised on the motorsports cable and satellite channel.

Selected as one of only six World of Outlaws Late Model Series shows to be televised on SPEED this season, the event will be broadcast on Sept. 7 at 6 p.m.

Brown, Hill set for Big 33

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Justin Brown of Ursuline High School and Taylor Hill of Mooney will join all-star players from all over Pennsylvania to play a team of Ohio all-stars in the 51st Annual PNC Big 33 Football Classic at Hersheypark Stadium on June 14.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Canfield’s Berndt

will attend YSU

CANFIELD — Canfield High golfer Jamie Berndt will attend Youngstown State University.

Berndt has been instrumental in the Canfield golf team’s recent successes. A three-year letter-winner, she twice was first team All Metro Athletic Conference selectee. As a senior, she was also chosen for the Northeast Ohio Golf Coaches’ Association’s all-star second team.

This past season she led the conference with a low stroke average of 39.66. She also was recognized as one of five scholarship recipients this year from the Ohio Girls’ Golf Foundation.

Ursuline’s Collins to attend Walsh

YOUNGSTOWN — Katy Collins, a senior member of the Ursuline High girls golf team last season, has signed an NAIA letter of intent to attend Walsh University in North Canton where she also will resume her golf career, announced Cavaliers’ coach Kevin Longanecker.

Collins, who was Ursuline’s No. 1 golfer, team medalist and team captain her senior season under coach Michelle Grunenwald, was awarded an athletic and academic scholarship to Walsh.

The daughter of Michael and Colleen Collins, Katy made the All-Steel Valley Conference first team as a junior and senior. Her senior season, she averaged 42 with a low round of 38.
