YOUNGSTOWN — A city woman is facing assault charges after allegedly attacking a security guard at the Western Reserve Transit Authority bus station on West Federal Street early Friday.

Police said Karen Peoples, 54, of Stewart Street complained to the female guard that the coffee machine in the building had taken her money. The guard got Peoples a cup of coffee, but said Peoples then “went off,” throwing the coffee on her and punching her until her lip, eye and nose were bleeding.

Peoples left the station but was arrested a short distance away.

Dog show for charity

YOUNGSTOWN — Animal Charity will sponsor its fourth annual Dog Show and Charity Hike from 1 to 4 p.m. June 8 at Boardman Park. The fundraiser gives dog owners the opportunity to have their pets put on display and judged in various categories. Dogs of all breeds, including mixed-breeds, are eligible for prizes.

The hike will be on the nature trails of Boardman Park. The cost for participation is $15 per event. Owners are reminded that their dog must have its current vaccinations, remain on a leash and be cleaned up after.

Garbage collection delay

YOUNGSTOWN — Garbage collection will be a day late because of Memorial Day on Monday. Trash collection will be the day after normal collection day. Residents should put their trash out one day later.

Teacher given bad food

NEW CASTLE — A 24-year-old Laurel High School teacher became ill and sought treatment after eating food provided to her by a male student Thursday, according to the Pennsylvania State Police. The food, possibly laced with a narcotic, will be tested, police said Friday. The teacher believed the food had been prepared in a home economics class. Police said charges are pending.

Fire station open house

POLAND — Western Reserve Joint Fire District will have an open house Monday from after the Memorial Day parade until 1 p.m. at the main station, Main Street.

Extra holiday patrols

BOARDMAN — Township police will be supplementing regular patrols with high-visibility patrols this weekend because of Memorial Day. Officers will be targeting all violators for aggressive driving offenses, operating vehicle while impaired-related violations and seatbelt use.

The department’s efforts will be in partnership with state and local law enforcement and highway safety officials through the holiday weekend to launch an aggressive national “Click It or Ticket” seatbelt enforcement campaign through June 1.

Council meeting moved

EAST PALESTINE — In observance of Memorial Day, city council has moved its next public meeting from Monday to Wednesday. The session will start at 7 p.m. Council members also announced they will meet once a month through the summer, canceling the second meeting of each month June through August, unless otherwise announced. Council will meet as scheduled June 9, July 14 and Aug. 11.

Route 154 resurfacing

ROGERS — The Ohio Department of Transportation’s District 11 will begin work Wednesday to resurface over six miles of state Route 154 in Columbiana County.

The road will be repaved from just east of Scroggs Road in Elkton to Rogers. Traffic will be maintained with flaggers. ODOT’s contractor for the $1.3 million project is Shelly Sands Inc. in Zanesville. The completion date is July 31.

Benefit poker run

NILES — A benefit poker run is set to help pay medical expenses for Niles burn victim Summer Hall. The 14-month-old received treatment at the Akron Hospital Burn Center after she was injured at home in May. The event will be June 28 at the Army Navy Garrison No. 224 at 418 Mason St.

It will also feature food, a 50/50 raffle, a Chinese auction and door prizes. Registration for the poker run is $10 and will begin at 10:30 a.m., with the bikes out from noon to 5 p.m. Call Jimmy Hall with questions at (330) 652-9981.
