260 participate in Memorial Day weekend fitness events

YOUNGSTOWN — Athletes from age 4 to 84 gathered at downtown’s Central YMCA on Saturday, running and spinning their way through three hours of Memorial Day weekend fitness events.

About 200 participants ran and walked five miles to Mill Creek Park and back. Nearly 60 more rode spinning bikes under a tent on South Champion Street for up to three hours, and 42 children ran a half-mile race. Some events began at 8:30 a.m.

Boardman High School sophomore Brandon Pasvanis, 16, was the overall male winner, passing the American flag pennants at the finish line after 29 minutes, 15 seconds.

“I was by myself most of the time,” he said. “It just makes it that much tougher.”

Kayla Witmer, 19, runs track as a sophomore at Youngstown State University and finished the race at 32 minutes, 47 seconds.

“Road races versus track are a whole different game,” she said.
