UWM takes first game in Horizon tournament


NILES — Wisconsin-Milwaukee outlasted Cleveland State, 10-7 in 14 innings, in the first game Wednesday at the Horizon League baseball tournament at Eastwood Field.

Milwaukee (21-34) scored three runs in the top of the 14th inning and closed out the Vikings (21-30) in the bottom half of the frame.

Sophomore Wes Munson scored from second on a single into center field from freshman Cole Kraft to give Milwaukee the lead. Sophomore Tim Patzman came up next and picked up a pair of RBIs with a double off the left-field wall. Patzman’s hit was his first since April 4.

The game saw the teams combine to play 33 different players, collect 32 hits and leave 26 runners on base.

The Panthers picked up the victory despite being outhit 18-14. UWM is 4-26 when being outhit by its opponent this season.

Senior Adam Ferrell (3-4) worked 6 innings to close out the game for the Panthers. Cleveland State junior Sam Suitca (1-6) took the loss.

Milwaukee junior Shawn Wozniak went 3-for-7 with a double and a home run, and had a game-high three RBIs. Wozniak’s home run was his sixth of the year.

Junior John Brown led the Vikings as he collected a season-high three hits with two RBIs and a double.
