Smoky Hollow plans memorial celebration

YOUNGSTOWN — The Golden Eagles are hosts of the 52nd annual Smoky Hollow Memorial Monday.

The program will begin at 11:15 a.m. at the war memorial, located on the corner of Walnut Street and Rayen Avenue in Smoky Hollow.

The program, which will include prayers and a patriotic address from Joseph Naples, educator in the Girard school district, will run about 45 minutes, with refreshments immediately following.

Sobriety checkpoint

A sobriety checkpoint will be in Mahoning County from 10 p.m. Thursday until 2 a.m. Friday.

The Mahoning County Operating Vehicle Impaired Task Force will have increased impaired driving enforcement, enforcing a zero tolerance for OVI offenders.

SCOPE spring dance

HOWLAND — The Howland SCOPE Senior Center is opening its doors to the public for its first spring dance Thursday.

The event will include music by the John Ruman Band, lunch and plenty of dips and twirls beginning at 11:30 a.m. and ending at 1:30 p.m.

Click It or Ticket

McDONALD — Chief Lou Ronghi announces that the McDonald Police Department is participating in the Click It or Ticket - What’s Holding You Back safety belt enforcement program.

The enforcement period will run through June 2.

Officers will be enforcing all seat belt laws by writing tickets to those in violation. No warnings will be issued.

Supplies needed

WARREN – SomePlace Safe, a Warren facility for abused women and their children, is in need of supplies to help continue its services.

Summit Entertainment, Paige Byrnes Insurance and North West Neighborhood Association Inc. are asking people to drop off nonperishable food items, paper products, including paper towels and toilet paper, laundry detergent and cleaning supplies at the Summit Rock Showcase from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Warren Amphitheatre.

During the event, those contributing will receive a ticket to win one of several prizes that will be given away during the evening. The drop-off area is the parking area on the hill nearest the amphitheater.

Road closures for Five Mile Road Race

CANFIELD — The YMCA is sponsoring the Memorial Five Mile Road Race from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

Because of the race, the following Mill Creek MetroPark drives will be closed: East Glacier Drive at Orange Street and High Street, Memorial Drive at Falls Avenue and West Glacier Drive at Price Road and Irving Road.

Park drives will be accessible south of Slippery Rock Bridge, and visitors may access Fellows Riverside Gardens and the Davis Visitor Center via Mahoning Avenue at McKinley Avenue.

School walk-through

AUSTINTOWN — Alumni, former staff and community members are invited to take one last look at the John W. Davis Elementary, which is closing with the end of this school year.

A final farewell and walk-through is set for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The school served the community for 54 years.

Police look into robbery

FARRELL, Pa. — Police are investigating an armed robbery at McQuaid’s Convenience Store, 1050 Sharon-New Castle Road. A man with a knife entered the store at 5:57 a.m. Tuesday and demanded money from the worker at the cash register, reported Southwest Mercer County Regional Police.
