Area’s jobless rates above state average

COLUMBUS — The state Tuesday released these unemployment rates for April: Mahoning County, 6 percent; Trumbull County, 6.2 percent; and Columbiana County, 6 percent. The state’s jobless rate was 5.6 percent. Youngstown posted the third-highest unemployment rate among 20 cities that were listed. Youngstown’s rate was 7.2 percent, which was topped by Dayton at 7.6 percent and Cleveland at 8.2 percent.

Trumbull gets grant for Warren Steel road, rail

WARREN — Trumbull County will receive a $336,100 grant from the Ohio Department of Development to improve road and rail access at Warren Steel Holdings, which is operating at the former site of Copperweld Steel.

The company has completed about $20 million in renovations and proposes to invest an additional $1.6 million for rail improvements. Trumbull County will upgrade the Warren & Trumbull operating line between the state Route 5/82 bypass and Paige Avenue and resurface the crossing grading at intersections with North River Road, Mahoning Avenue, Comstock Street, Hall Road and North Street.

The project is expected to create 135 jobs and retain 95 positions within the three years.
