Site work for school expected by September

If all goes according to plan, the new school should open in August 2010.
NORTH LIMA — In an effort to take advantage of good weather, grading and other work on site of the new South Range K-12 school complex could begin late this summer.
Dana Strizzi, project manager for Hammond Construction, told the school board Monday that grading and site preparation will have to get under way this year in order to stick with the project’s time line. Hammond, of Canton, was hired as construction manager to oversee the project.
“We should be moving some dirt the beginning of September or late August,” he said, explaining that parts of the project will go out for bid in mid-July and contracts awarded in August.
Actual construction of the 200,000-square-foot building is expected to begin next the spring, once weather breaks.
Hammond Construction is overseeing the project and working now on early design development with Balog, Steins, Hendricks and Manchester Architects of Youngstown.
Last May, district voters approved a 28-year bond issue to generate the local share of $18.3 million for the project. The state’s share of nearly $20 million represents 52 percent of the total cost.
The building, with three separate areas for the high school, junior high and elementary school, will sit on 60 acres along state Route 46 and Green Beaver Road in Beaver Township. The Green Beaver Baseball Complex is on the property now.
Though the three buildings will occupy separate space, plans call for common areas including an auditorium and cafeteria.
