WNBA Roundup: Sunday’s games

Sun 77, Liberty 63

NEW YORK — Tamika Whitmore scored 14 of her 17 points in the first half, Asjha Jones and Lindsay Whalen had 16 each and the Sun spoiled the Liberty’s season opener, 77-63, at Madison Square Garden. “We still don’t have all of our rhythm yet,” Connecticut coach Mike Thibault said. “We looked sluggish early trying to run the ball. I think we caught our second wind down the stretch, with six or seven minutes to go. We regrouped.” Connecticut (2-0) is without two of its top four scorers from last season. Two-time All-Star and Indiana native Katie Douglas was traded to the Fever in a deal for Whitmore, and veteran forward Nykesha Sales is sitting out the season due to various injuries.

Lynx 84, Shock 70

MINNEAPOLIS — Rookie Charde Houston scored 21 points in her WNBA debut, and fellow first-year guard Candice Wiggins added 15. Houston helped key a 20-4 run spanning the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth as the Lynx took control. Former Minnesota player Katie Smith led Detroit with 17 points. The Shock were coming off an 85-66 victory against Houston in their home opener on Saturday. Plenette Pierson added 15 for Detroit.
