Pens face Red Wings for Cup


PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins will open the Stanley Cup Finals on Saturday in Detroit against the Red Wings.

The Red Wings advanced to the final series by defeating the Dallas Stars, 4-1, on Monday in Dallas.

The Final series opens with Games 1 and 2 (Monday) at Joe Louis Arena. Cable-TV channel Versus will show those games.

Games 3 and 4 will be at Mellon Arena on May 28 (Wednesday) and May 31 (Saturday). NBC will televise those games.

If necessary, Game 5 will be in Detroit on June 2, Game 6 in Pittsburgh on June 4 and Game 7 in Detroit on June 7. All game times are 8 p.m.

The Pens advanced to their third Stanley Cup Final by ousting the Ottawa Senators (four games), the New York Rangers (five games) and Philadelphia Flyers (five games). The Pens won the Stanley Cup in 1991 and 1992. Youngstown businessman Edward J. DeBartolo owned the team in 1991.

The Red Wings have won the Stanley Cup three times since 1997. Their most recent championship was in 2002.
