Man thought to be shot in head had laceration instead, cops say

staff report

YOUNGSTOWN — Police have learned that the Youngstown man who appeared to have been shot in the head Saturday evening suffered a severe laceration and wound to the head but not a gunshot.

David Montgomery, 26, of Broadway, was in stable condition Sunday night at St. Elizabeth Health Center after ambulance personnel took him there Saturday.

Police sent a crime lab technician and a detective to Broadway Street near Covington Street on the North Side to investigate the assault on Montgomery. A paramedic at the scene advised police that Montgomery appeared to have been shot in the back of the head.

Workers at St. Elizabeth’s, however, later told police Montgomery had not been shot, according to a Youngstown Police report.

An officer talked to Montgomery at the hospital Saturday. Montgomery told them he had been assaulted but he would not give police any other information.

Police had begun investigating at two locations Saturday around 7 p.m. when Montgomery was found — Broadway at Covington and two blocks north at Fairmont Avenue and Covington.

Police found a vehicle on Fairmont with its rear windshield shot out.
