CANFIELD — A matinee horse show that was to have taken place Sunday at the Canfield Fairgrounds was postponed because of inclement weather. The event, put on by the Canfield Harness Horsemen’s Association, has been rescheduled for 1:30 p.m. June 1 at the fairgrounds.
Memorial service
YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Bar Association will conduct a memorial service at 11 a.m. Thursday in the county courthouse, 120 Market St., to honor judges and lawyers who have died within the past year. The service will be in the domestic relations court on the fourth floor. Those being remembered are: Judge Martin P. Joyce of the county juvenile court, and Attys. William M. Marshall Jr., John M. Newman, Raymond Fine, John P. Haralambie, Steven P. Stanos, Anna C. Hudak-Anness and Mary Jane Stephens. Father Thomas M. Constantine of St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church and Father Gary J. George of St. Maron Maronite Catholic Church will officiate.
Memorial Day parade
NEW MIDDLETOWN — The annual Memorial Day parade begins with a line-up at 9:30 a.m. May 26 at Springfield Local High School. The parade begins at 10 a.m. and proceeds to Springfield Elementary, where there will be a memorial and taps played at the flagpole. Sgt. Ken Goist of the village police department said a speaker for the memorial service will be announced.
Scrap tire project
BERLIN CENTER — Berlin Township is to receive a $150,000 portion of a scrap tire grant to pave three roads using scrap tires. The project will see a 1-inch leveling course and a 1-inch surface course on Leffingwell and Mill roads; Ohio Avenue will be paved with a 6-inch base course of asphalt that contains 5 percent scrap tire material. The project is one of seven across Ohio that will use nearly $775,000 of grant money awarded to encourage and strengthen scrap tire recycling efforts statewide.
‘Bridging the Gap’
WARREN — A workshop addressing civil rights and police procedures will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the YWCA, 375 N. Park Ave for Trumbull County residents and law enforcement. The event, “Bridging the Gap,” will explore ways the community can work with law enforcement to make interactions more positive. Avery S. Friedman, a CNN legal commentator and civil rights attorney, will aid in the discussion, along with a panel that will talk about Taser use and legitimate reasons for traffic stops. The workshop is a collaborative effort of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Warren-Trumbull County NAACP, INspiring Minds, the YWCA and multiple Trumbull police departments.
Solidarity Group meets
YOUNGSTOWN — The Solidarity Group, comprised of all eight city employee union officials, has been meeting weekly to discuss cost-saving measures to reduce or eliminate the number of layoffs as proposed by Mayor Jay Williams, according to a news release. Solidarity is committed to working together to pursue through city and union cooperation cost effectiveness and efficiency with both short and long-term goals, the group said. The mayor made a request on behalf of the unions to the finance director “and we are waiting for specific dollar amounts that will show how much each union will need to reduce to avoid reductions/layoffs for an 18-month period,” the Solidarity Group said.
