District action begins

Spring sports tournaments continue this week, including track and field, which begins with district meets at several area sites.

Baseball and softball continue today as teams — with two exceptions — begin district play.

All of the area’s baseball teams will converge on Cene Park, with district semifinal games on Fields 1 and 2.

The Division III tournament begins today at 4:30 p.m., followed by Div. IV on Tuesday, Div. I on Wednesday and Div. II on Thursday.

The semifinal winners return the following day for their championship game on Field 1.

In softball, there are two Div. IV sectional finals scheduled for today — Warren JFK at Lordstown, and Jackson-Milton at McDonald.

Those winners return Thursday at Lakeview High School for district semifinals.

Other district sites are Boardman’s Fields of Dreams (Div. I), Jefferson (Div. II) and the South Range complex (Div. III).

In all 14 baseball teams and 14 softball teams from the area remain alive.

Boys tennis continues with district tournament play in Oberlin (Div. I) and Canton (Div. II).

At Oberlin, Boardman’s doubles team of Scott Warden and Robert Salcedo qualified by winning the sectional championship. They will open district play Thursday, and can qualify to the state tournament by finishing as one of the top six placers.

At Canton, four singles players and four doubles teams from the area qualified and will start Wednesday at Weis Park courts.

Poland’s Ben Brocker and Anthony Rosselli, Mooney’s Luke Spahija, and Warren JFK’s Michael Fredericka all qualified in singles.

The doubles teams are Ryan and Zubin Teckchandani of Poland, and teammates Stu Duchek and Kenny Duncan, along with Albert Covelli and Larry D’Amico of JFK and Chad Dager and Neil Ormerod of Lakeview.

Track and field athletes begin their quest for the state meet with district events at Austintown Fitch (Div. I), Salem and Pymatuning Valley (Div. II) and Springfield (Div. III).
