Poland sweeps sectional; Boardman doubles win


BOARDMAN — Poland’s Ben Brocker won the singles crown, while teammates Ryan and Zubin Teckchandani won the doubles title at the conclusion of the Division II boys tennis sectional on Saturday at Boardman Tennis Center.

In the championship matches, Brocker defeated Warren JFK’s Michael Fredericka, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, while the Teckchandanis defeated Albert Covelli and Larry D’Amico, also of JFK, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Another Poland player, Anthony Rosselli, placed third after beating Luka Spahija of Cardinal Mooney, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

In the semifinals, Brocker defeated Spahija, while Fredericka beat Rosselli.

Thus, the top four singles players advancing to the district in Canton Wednesday are Brocker, Fredericka, Anthony Rosselli and Spahija.

Both Brocker and the Teckchandanis were the sectional’s No. 2 seeds.

In the other bracket of the doubles finals, Chad Dager and Neil Ormerod of Lakeview defeated Poland’s Stu Duchek and Kenny Duncan 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In the semifinals, the Teckchandanis defeated Dager-Ormerod 6-0, 7-5, while Covelli-D’Amico beat Duchek-Duncan 6-2, 6-2.

The four doubles teams also advance to the Canton district.

Division I at Canton

CANTON — Boardman’s Scott Warden and Robert Salcedo won the Div. I sectional doubles championship by beating Hoover’s Tyler Schuller-Tony Kendle, 6-2, 6-2.

Earlier, Warden-Salcedo beat Hoban’s Erik Kaminski-Alec Hyde.

Also, Canfield’s William Kenyhercz-Nick Hardy lost to Jackson’s Louie Thomas-Will Eisenberg .

In singles, Canfield’s Steve Stanislaw lost to Hoover’s Nate Fockler 6-0, 6-3.

SOLON —Among area players, Howland’s Josh Reeher lost to a Hudson player 6-4, 6-3; Warren Harding’s George Makridis lost to Kenston, 6-0, 6-0; Harding’s Costa Ploumbis fell to Cloverleaf, 6-0, 6-0; Harding’s Jeff McCarty was beaten by Brecksville, 6-0, 6-0; Howland’s Faisal Mangalji was eliminated by Nordonia, 6-3, 7-5; and Howland’s Sean Philbin lost to Solon, 6-2, 7-6.

Howland’s No. 3-seeded Elliot Dewey and MattMadgar lost to a doubles team from Hudson, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Howland’s Matt Shroder and Thomas Kovoor also lost, 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, to Tallmadge.
