New slate inducted for Links chapter


BOARDMAN — Holiday Inn South provided the setting April 27 for installation of the officers who will head the Youngstown Chapter of The Links Inc. during the upcoming season.

Dr. Beverly Atwater, former chapter member, conducted the induction ceremony for Anne R. Cobbin, who will serve her second term as president from 2008-2010.

Also seated were her associate officers, Krishmu Shipmon, vice president; Alnita Bryant-Russell, recording secretary; JoAnn Blunt, financial secretary; Germaine Bennett, treasurer; and Janice L. Beachum, corresponding secretary.

Assuming their duties as facet chairwomen were Dr. Virginia Banks-Bright, the arts; Susan Moorer, national trends and services; Wanda Smith, international trends and services; and Beachum, services to youth.

Serving as other committee chairwomen will be Margaret Staples, hospitality and social/ways and means; Shipmon, membership, projects and programming; Sandra Thompkins-Harper, bylaws and parliamentarian; Bennett, scholarship, budget and finance, and ethics; Beachum, public relations and chapter journalist; Mabel Paige, chaplain; Joan Boyd, archivist; and Juanita Davis, nominating and audit.

During the past two years, the chapter donated $5,800 to Ursuline Sisters HIV/AIDS Children’s Ministry; contributed $4,000 to Dandridge’s Burgundi Manor for the elderly, donated toys and gifts for children at Christmas, participated in tutoring at Operation Learning Community Program, purchased newspapers in education for two elementary school classrooms, sponsored a bowling/pizza party and an afternoon at the movies for children of Casa Madre (HIV/AIDS Ministry) and donated $5,000 to sponsor two high-school students on an educational trip, “Sojourn to the Past.”

The organization also recently co-sponsored the “300 Sisters in Red” health fair, and continues to provide services to the community in the areas of arts, cultural and entertaining programming, education and health care, health and fitness, and services to youth. Collectively, members logged more than 3,500 hours of service during the past year.
