New castle burglaries |April/May


The warmer months typically see an increase in burglaries, notes New Castle Police Chief Tom Sansone. He recommends residents look out for their neighbors and make sure homes and businesses are secure.

There were 55 burglaries and attempted burglaries of homes and businesses in New Castle in April, up from 32 in March, 32 in February and 28 in January, Uniform Crime Report statistics show. This sampling from police reports shows where burglars hit, what they took and how they got in:

April 29: Rebecca Street, copper pipes damaged, burglar entered through first-floor kitchen window.

April 24: South Jefferson Street, copper pipes stolen, furnace damaged in the process, burglar broke in through basement door.

April 22: Court Street, collectibles stolen, homeowner reported it was the second time the home was hit in two days. A side door was forced open.

April 20: West Winter Avenue, police solved a burglary in progress that was called in by a neighbor.

April 19: Cleveland Avenue, copper plumbing stolen from vacant home sometime in prior two weeks, burglar entered through a basement window.

April 15: Warren Avenue, Bose radio stolen, bedroom ransacked. Burglar entered through a side window.

April 16: Hamilton Street, copper pipes and jewelry, burglar broke in through a back door.

April 14: Shad Hannas, Butler Avenue, beer stolen. Burglar broke in through a side door.

April 13: Booker Drive, new copper pipes stolen from building being remodeled. Extensive water damage after water line was taken. Burglar took plywood off a window.

April 13: Huron Avenue, jewelry stolen,

homeowner returned to find front door wide open. Burglar forced open a back door.

April 11: Galbreath Street, Acorn Street, Harrington Street, North Ray Street. Police were notified that copper pipes were stolen from the basements in weeks prior.

April 10: Adams Street, unsure whether anything was taken, burglar kicked in the front door.

April 9: Cascade Street, St. Joseph’s School, $42 taken. Burglar got in through a window.

April 7: Lathrop Street, stolen were a video camera, digital camera, 3 video consoles, 3 PlayStation games. Burglar got into the house through a back door during the day as the homeowner slept inside.

So far in May, police have released details about three burglaries:

May 2: South Ray Street, stolen were a laptop computer, printer and portable DVD player. The burglar smashed in a basement window.

May 4: Gibson Street, attempted burglary, burglar kicked in a door.

May 5: Dave’s Market, East Long Avenue, cigarettes stolen. Burglar knocked glass out of a door.
