YOUNGSTOWN — A Hubbard Road man was convicted on four counts of rape that could send him to prison for up to 40 years. A jury in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court found Carl Chaney, 51, guilty of the charges Friday.

Chaney was indicted on seven rape counts, in addition to charges of aggravated burglary and kidnapping involving an incident in June 2007. The jury found him innocent of three counts of rape and the two other charges.

Court records say Chaney was accused of assaulting a former girlfriend. Chaney maintained he was innocent of the rape charges because the sex was consensual. The trial, which began Tuesday, was in the courtroom of Judge Timothy Franken.

W. Federal St. closing

YOUNGSTOWN — The city will close the eastbound lane of West Federal Street between Hazel and Chestnut streets from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to accommodate the dedication ceremony for the newly constructed Taft Technology Center.

The posted detour will be south on Vindicator Square, east on Boardman Street, and north on Market Street. The public is urged to use caution in the area as crews are continuing to work on the West Federal Street rehabilitation project.

Memorial Day parade

NEW MIDDLETOWN — The annual Memorial Day parade begins with a line-up at 9:30 a.m. May 26 at Springfield Local High School. The parade begins at 10 a.m. and proceeds to Springfield Elementary where there will be a memorial and taps played at the flagpole. Sgt. Ken Goist of the village police department said a speaker for the memorial service will be announced.

Black caucus to meet

AUSTINTOWN — The Youngstown Warren Black Caucus meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the AFSCME Union Hall, 150 S. Four Mile Run Road here.

The caucus plans to discuss training and planning for its voter education program this summer as well as dates for a fundraiser. All members are asked to attend, and those who are considering membership should attend as well. Caucus president is Jaladah Aslam.

Citywide cleanup set

YOUNGSTOWN — The city is having a citywide cleanup from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 31, an effort to get rid of trash and debris that litters the neighborhoods.

Anyone interesting in participating should meet at the Chevrolet Centre at 8:30 a.m., where gloves and bags will be distributed.
