Church is offering Overcomer Meetings

POLAND — Gospel Baptist Church will host Overcomer Meetings, a weekend of activities for people with any type of disability, Friday through May 25.

The featured speaker will be Dr. Tim Mahler, a quadriplegic, who founded Truth for Trials Ministries.

Friday’s session will take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Georgeanna Parker Center in Boardman Park. The video “Life Without Limbs: From No Limbs to No Limits” will be shown.

Saturday’s meeting will take place from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the church’s fellowship hall, 6235 Clingan Road, Poland. The featured video will be “Clebe McClary: Portrait of An American Hero.”

Light refreshments will be served after each session, and there will be games and prizes.

The meetings will conclude Sunday with services in the church auditorium at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. and at 6 p.m.

CPR instructor class

BOARDMAN — An instructor class for CPR and first aid is offered on June 21 and 22 at the Mahoning County American Red Cross office in Boardman. Classes are available to anyone who has current CPR and first aid training. Those skills must be demonstrated at the beginning of the course. Attendance is required both days from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free skills practice sessions will be available to enrollees. Graduates of this course are qualified to teach American Red Cross First Aid, CPR/AED, Workplace Safety, Safe Baby, First Aid and Preparedness, along with other courses. New back procedure

YOUNGSTOWN — A minimally invasive procedure called percutaneous disc decompression can now be performed at St. Elizabeth Health Center. For patients who have exhausted traditional noninvasive treatments such as physical therapy, painkillers and exercise, this treatment can be tried before back surgery. A probe is used to remove disc material, which may relieve pressure on the surrounding nerves.

Adoption education

HOWLAND — Northeast Ohio Adoption Services is hosting free Pre-Placement Education evening classes that will cover adoption and foster care topics at their offices at 5000 E. Market St., Suite 26. There will be 12 sessions beginning June 9 and continuing until July 17 from 6-9 p.m. on topics such as the needs of children in the welfare system and how to become an adoptive or foster parent. Adults over the age of 21 are eligible to adopt through NOAS. In Ohio, there are 6,000 children waiting for a permanent family. Reservations are required to attend the classes. Health kiosk

A kiosk at St. Elizabeth’s in Boardman, which was unveiled Friday, gives employees access to tools and information to improve their health. Kiosk users can establish their own health history records that compile and store test results. The kiosks can measure and record blood pressure, weight and heart rate. Both St. Elizabeth and St. Joseph health centers have similar kiosks that have been installed since March 2006. The kiosks were purchased with Hospitals as the Healthiest Workplaces in Ohio! grant money from the Ohio Hospital Association’s Foundation for Healthy Communities.

Blood donors honored

CLEVELAND — The American Red Cross is hosting a ceremony on Monday at its headquarters in Cleveland to recognize 65 donors from the Northern Ohio Blood Services Region who have reached one of three milestone levels: Honor for 200-224 donations, Tribute for 225-249 donations and Legacy for 250 or more donations.

YMCA wins award

HERMITAGE — The Shenango Valley YMCA was awarded a Community YMCA award for exceptional work to support military families from the Armed Services YMCA at a luncheon on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. YMCAs that receive the $1,000 provide special programs to the families of National Guard and Reserve members who are not located on or near major military bases. The Shenango Valley YMCA offers free memberships to active military members and their families.
