YOUNGSTOWN —The annual YSU Penguin Club Bill Dailey Golf Outing will feature a morning and an afternoon flight to provide a full day of events for as many participants as possible.

On June 4 at Oak Tree Country Club in West Middlesex, Pa., the morning flight starts at 7:30 while the afternoon portion is set to tee off at 12:30. Contact Tom Morella at (330) 941-2351.

Thunder camp set

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley Thunder youth football camp is scheduled at the Chevrolet Centre on June 23-24.

Skowron to play soccer in Italy

YOUNGSTOWN — Veronica Skowron, who competed on the Cardinal Mooney High School soccer team, has been invited to play in Italy this summer.

Skowron was invited to compete as a member on the USA Athletes International Soccer team.

Now a student at Lake Erie College, Skowron will be one of 16 athletes on the team who will serve both as players and ambassadors.

The Italian Soccer partnerships invited the USA Athletes International Soccer to compete in the Italian ultimate series from May 28th through June 6th.

Free soccer clinic

BOARDMAN — YMCA Camp Fitch and Major League Soccer will put on a free clinic in Boardman Park on May 22.

Players age 8-11 will attend from 5:30 until 7 p.m. Players age 12-14 will attend from 7 until 8:30 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Eric Schnatz, former Ohio Wesleyan Univ. placekicker, has been signed by the Mahoning Valley Thunder of the af2.

Schnatz (6-2, 220), 27, is the Thunder’s fourth kicker this season. He is expected to be in the lineup tonight when the Thunder (1-6) seeks to snap a six-game losing streak at the Louisville Fire (4-3).

Starting at quarterback for Louisville will be Aaron Marshall, former Youngstown State quarterback.

MVCA scholarships

YOUNGSTOWN — Ten area high school athletes have received scholarships from the Mahoning Valley Coaches Association.

The winners are Dayna Daltorio (Cardinal Mooney High), Michael Diehl (Badger), Emily Dolsak (McDonald), Lindsey Foster (Warren JFK), Anna Gault (McDonald), Sophia Gault (McDonald), Matt Krumpak (McDonald), James Manionis (Western Reserve), Zachary Matisi (Lowellville) and Mike Popio (Boardman).

LOWELLVILLE — John Wellendorf of Lowellville High School will play football at Muskingum College.

At Lowellville Wellendorf (6-0, 180) was an all-ITCL linebacker.

Paterno is recovering

AUSTIN, Texas — Penn State coach Joe Paterno said Friday he feels fine after going to the hospital this week to be treated for dehydration.

A day after his brief hospital visit, the 81-year-old Paterno was in Austin, attending a dinner at the University of Texas to support an endowed chair named after Longhorns coach Mack Brown.

Amputee runner wins right to try for team

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius won his appeal Friday and can compete for a place in the Beijing Olympics.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that the 21-year-old South African is eligible to race against able-bodied athletes, overturning a ban imposed by the International Association of Athletics Federations.

CAS said the unanimous ruling goes into effect immediately.

Pistorius still must reach a qualifying time to run in the individual 400 meters at the Aug. 8-24 Beijing Games.
