Junior Civic League to present scholarships to 13 graduates


BOARDMAN — The Junior Civic League will present scholarships to 13 area high-school graduates during a scholarship luncheon at 2 p.m. June 1 at the Holiday Inn South, 7410 South Ave.

The featured speaker will be Dr. Cryshanna A. Jackson, assistant professor at the Political Science and Pre-Law Center of Youngstown State University.

Brittany Markale Lott of Youngstown Christian High School, the “2007 Miss Cinderella,” will be the recipient of a $2,500 scholarship.

Graduates who will be awarded $1,500 scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year:

UAaron Carmichael, Girard High School.

UAlyssa Robbins, East High School.

UChanel Rogers, Liberty High School.

UJeremy Frazer, Brittany Clark, Edna Robinson, Tamika Warren and Sarai Griffin, Cardinal Mooney High School.

UMicaela Rhodes, Austintown Fitch High School.

UCaprice Cornwell, Chaney High School.

Selected to receive YSU scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each are Andrea Harper and Taquaesa Toney, representatives of the Youngstown Early College Program.

Since its inception, the JCL has awarded more than $410,000 in scholarships to high-school students on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, community involvement and personal qualities and strengths.

In addition to recognizing the young scholars, the JCL will install the following officers for the 2008-1010 term: Elsina Winston, president; Cynthia Mason, vice president; Joi Alston-Thornton, recording secretary; Sylvia Hudson, corresponding secretary; Christine Hennings, treasurer; Francis Curd, financial secretary; and Susan Moorer, parliamentarian. New members Lori Shells-Cone and Marcella Hodge will be introduced.
