Drop & Go event moves indoors

BOARDMAN — An event where residents can drop off their unwanted but still usable household items to benefit area charities will be indoors because of the weather. The Drop Go event is planned from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today inside township road department garage, behind the government center, Market Street.

Habitat for Humanity, ReStore, Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley and Goodwill will use donations to help people in need. Baby items, beds, bedding, canned goods, usable and working household items that are nonhazardous, luggage, kitchen items and clothing and shoes are among the items that will be accepted. Auto parts; bathtubs; computers; electronics; chemicals; scrap metal; pianos and organs; solvents; paint; tires; gas cans; hazardous items; hospital, water and sofa beds; hot water tanks; trash and junk will not be accepted.

Crash kills passenger

YOUNGSTOWN — The male passenger in a Chevrolet Cavalier traveling south on Glenwood Avenue on Thursday afternoon died after the car collided with a cement truck traveling north near Midlothian Boulevard, said Detective Sgt. Patricia Garcar, an accident investigator. The victim was identified as Amir Fareer, 43, of Youngstown, by Mahoning County Coroner David M. Kennedy. A ruling on the death is pending. Garcar said the crash happened at 3:40 p.m. when the Cavalier driver, thinking he could beat the truck, turned in front of it. No other serious injuries were reported.

Hit-run sent to court

MERCER, Pa. — A man accused of hitting an Amish buggy then leaving the scene without helping the victim waived his preliminary hearing Friday. District Justice Lorinda Hinch then sent his case to the Mercer County Common Pleas court.

Timothy F. Alter, 29, of Transfer, Pa., appeared in Hinch’s courtroom Friday morning in handcuffs and an orange jump suit. He’d remained in Mercer County prison in lieu of a $10,000 bond. That amount did not change Friday.

Alter is accused of hit-and-run involving death or injury and driving with a suspended license over the May 5 accident, which happened on Pa. Route 358 in Perry Township. Erven Byler, 22, of Crawford County was flung 50 feet from the buggy after it was hit from behind. Byler remained in critical condition Friday at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. His horse was killed.

Driver assaulted, robbed

WARREN — City police are investigating the reported assault and robbery of a lost motorist looking for directions. A 38-year-old Niles man told police he was lost in the area of Fifth Street just after 9 p.m. Thursday when he stopped to ask a man walking down the street for directions. Reports say the man reached into the car, turned off the ignition and began punching the motorist in the face. The motorist noticed his wallet and cell phone missing after the attack.

Mosquito spraying

HOWLAND — The township will be sprayed for mosquitoes by Alexander Pest Control from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, June 16-17, July 14-15, Aug. 11-12, and Sept. 8-9. In case of rain, the spraying will take place the next evening. Residents are encouraged to close their windows, keep pets indoors and not to leave any food outdoors during the spraying.

Road to close 90 days

CANFIELD — Western Reserve Road, along the Canfield-Beaver Township line, over state Route 11 will be closed for 90 days, effective Monday.

Traffic will be detoured to New Buffalo Road, state Route 165 and Detwiler Road. The closure is to allow completion of bridge deck reconstruction. The project is administered by the Ohio Department of Transportation’s District 4.

Memorials for patients

Forum Health Northside Medical Center and Trumbull Memorial Hospital will have their annual ecumenical memorial services in honor of the patients who died while hospitalized in 2007. Special invitations have been sent out to the families and a brief reception will take place after both services.

The North Side service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., Youngstown. The TMH service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Sts. Cyril Methodius Church, 185 Laird Ave., Warren.
