Stanislaw, doubles teams advance


CANTON — Steve Stanislaw of Canfield High School has advanced to the quarterfinals after winning three singles matches in the Division I sectional tennis tournament Thursday at Weis Park.

Stanislaw defeated Patrick Kramer of Akron Hoban, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; Kyle Krist of Massillon Perry, 6-1, 6-2 and Mike McAndrew of Massillon Jackson, 6-1, 6-0; and he’ll be playing Nate Fockler of North Canton Hoover today in the quarterfinals.

He is the only local singles player with a chance of advancing to the district tournament.

Stanislaw’s teammates, Pat Sankovic and Marcus Suffolk, each won one match before losing in the second round.

Kevin Howells of Boardman won two matches before losing to Mitch Plum of Green, 6-2, 6-2.

Fitch’s Anthony Womer won one match before losing in the second round.

In doubles, Boardman’s Scott Warden and Robert Salcedo have advanced to the quaretrfinals. They had a first-round bye, then defeated Truc Pham and Phat Vo of Akron North, 6-0, 6-0, and Alex Stern-Zach Mullen of Marietta, 6-0, 6-0, to reach the quarterfinals.

Canfield’s William Kenyhercz and Nick Hardy are also in the quarterfinals after two wins, including 6-1, 6-0 over Chase Wilson and Christian McCauley of Uniontown Lake. in the second third round.

Division II

YOUNGSTOWN — Three quarterfinal-round singles matches were held at Volney Rogers Thursday.

Michael Fredericka of Warren JFK defeated Dave Webb of Liberty, 6-0, 6-0; Luka Spahija of Mooney defeated Brian Ross of JFK, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, and Anthony Rosselli of Poland defeated Matt DePietro of Lakeview, 6-0, 6-0.
