DIVISION I

Canfield 5, Warren Harding 1

CANFIELD — Jared Turocy (6-0) pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and also hit a double and single to lead Canfield past Warren Harding. Jake Kucek, Kyle Vaclav and Mark Carrocce contributed RBI singles for Canfield (23-3), which advanced to a district semifinal game next Wednesday at Cene Park.

Boardman 24, East 5

BOARDMAN — Boardman had 15 hits overall and scored 14 runs in the second inning to roll past East. Kevin McCulloh led the Boardman attack with a double, two singles and six RBIs, while Dan Kubala and Josh Fithian each had two singles and three RBIs. Mike Galautti added two singles and one RBI. Starter Jason Fithian (1-0) and fourth-inning reliever Jon Dana combined to pitch a six-hitter. Fithian got the win and is 1-0. The Spartans (15-8) play Fitch today at 4:30 p.m.

Fitch 4, Ashtabula Lakeside 0

AUSTINTOWN — Mike Olenych (3-2) pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and he also hit a solo homer and double and had two RBIs to pace Fitch. Jason Bagoly also smashed a solo homer with a double, single and two RBIs to also lead the Falcons. J.D. Kubacki added two singles for Fitch (11-7). Lakeside is 3-18.

DIVISION II

Niles 2, Ravenna 1

NILES — With the scored tied 1-1, the Red Dragons (7-17) scored the deciding run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Nick Harper hit a double and single and Evan Bollinger a double for Niles. Mike Kelly scattered five hits, with six strikeouts to pick up the win. The Ravens’ (8-14) losing pitcher Nicholas Hull allowed four hits, with eight strikeouts.

Howland 10, Liberty 2

HOWLAND —Senior Eric Jones’ single scored Josh Kostraba with one out in the bottom of the third inning to snap a 2-2 tie. The win sent Howland (13-12) against Struthers today at Cene Park at 4:30 in a sectional championship.Jones finished with three hits, one of which was a double, for four RBIs; Kostraba, a senior, had three hits and an RBI, Joe Aulizia had three singles and Vince Villio had two hits for the Tigers. Two of Kostraba’s hits were doubles. Andy Zigmont gave up four hits before Matt Schultz allowed two hits in the sixth and seventh innings. For Liberty (1-14), Justin Machamer had two hits including a double and Nate Fader had two hits.

Crestwood 6, Salem 4

SALEM — Crestwood jumped out to a 5-1 lead against Salem. Winning pitcher Eric Stuart had two hits including a triple and Tony Zambatoro added two hits with a double for Crestwood (11-10). Salem (9-14) was led by Zac O’Brien with three hits including a triple. Crestwood advanced to play at Hubbard today.

Southeast 9, Minerva 8

RAVENNA — Anthony Pennington singled home Eric Fleming with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Southeast advanced. Anthony Cianci had three singles and Matt Bright added a double for the Pirates (8-14).

DIVISION III

Girard 6, Pymatuning Valley 1

GIRARD — The Indians (16-9) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and went on to win a second straight sectional championship. Jason Johnson, in his second year as Girard coach said, “Our 13 seniors, seven are starters, are excited about returning to the district. We lost the district final to Ursuline last year.” Marty Brinker, Chris Weibel and Eric Archer combined to pitch a three-hitter against Pymatuning Valley, Brinker (5-1) worked six innings, with seven strikeouts to pick up the win. Nick DeVore hit a pair of singles and scored twice. Brett Cubellis hit two singles, stole a base, scored twice and drove in two runs. Larry Goist hit a double, two singles and drove in two runs, while Aaron Jennings hit a double and single. Travis Kume hit a pair of singles for Pymatuning Valley (15-11). The Indians will play East Palestine in a district semifinal game Monday at Cene Park.

DIVISION IV

McDonald 11, Jackson-Milton 1

McDONALD — Junior Mike Thomas and Anthony Raschilla each had two hits for McDonald (16-4) in a game that had 13 errors. Thomas had three RBIs, while Raschilla, a sophomore, doubled. Raschilla (7-1) allowed three hits in three innings before Mike Gatta gave up another hit. Joe Sarisky had two hits for Jackson-Milton, which committed nine errors. McDonald advanced to a district semifinal at Cene Park next Tuesday to play Lowellville.

Mathews 9, Youngstown Christian 0

VIENNA — A five-run first inning was more than enough as Mathews (17-3-1) cruised to a sectional championship. Rick Sommers hit a home run, while John Scudier and Kyle Davis each hit a pair of singles. Jake Swank (4-0) pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts to pick up the win.

Maplewood 1, Ashtabula SJP 0

ASHTABULA — Mike Finch pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk for Maplewood, to best Jim Phelps who threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts and two walks. Maplewood got its winning run in the sixth inning when Chris Tucker hit a solo homer to break the scoreless duel. Maplewood (11-15) advanced to play next Tuesday at the Euclid district.

REGULAR SEASON

Lakeview 17, Newton Falls 0

CORTLAND — Josh Pryor tossed a three-hit shutout and Lakeview (13-10, 8-6 Trumbull Athletic Conference) won in five innings. Kevin Monti had three hits and three RBI’s for the Bulldogs. Dan Leeworthy had a double for Newton Falls.
