YOUNGSTOWN — All parking decks and surface lots at Youngstown State University will be open for guests for the undergraduate commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday in Beeghly Center.
Wick Avenue, however, will be closed between 9 and 10 a.m. for “10 Miles to Cure Thirst,” a community foot race, so the university advises all commencement guests to park on the west side of campus in either the Fifth Avenue parking lot (M-24) or the parking deck on Lincoln Avenue. Zoning hearing reset
HUBBARD — The township zoning commission hearing was postponed Thursday night and rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. June 5. Rocco Barletta of Barletta Landscaping Inc. applied for a zone change from agriculture to B-3, so he could open a specialty wine and gift shop.
American Legion post plans holiday events
POLAND — American Legion Mahoning Valley Post 15 Memorial Day parade and activities begin at 9 a.m. May 26 at the Cortland Street post with a ceremony.
The parade begins at 10 a.m. and travels down College Street, turns right on South Main Street, left on Riverside Drive and into the Riverside Cemetery.
A ceremony will also be conducted on the Main Street Bridge in honor of those lost at sea, with full memorial services in the cemetery.
Ken Carano, the Mahoning Regional director for Gov. Ted Strickland, will serve as speaker of the day. Past Post 15 Commander Ed Savel will serve as parade grand marshal.
In case of inclement weather, memorial ceremonies will be in the Poland Middle School gymnasium.
The opening ceremony honors four chaplains who during World War II gave their life jackets to four others when their ship, the USTA Dorchester, sank after being torpedoed by a German submarine.

HOWLAND — Appraiser Marcel Ulrich will be at Shepherd of the Valley, 4100 North River Road, today to appraise items from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Coins and firearms are not permitted. The event is free, and appointments are not needed.

Howland fire ruled arson
HOWLAND — A fire at 2207 Larchmont Ave. at 3:50 a.m. Thursday was deliberately set, the fire department said. No injuries were reported.
The fire was first dispatched to Warren and when firefighters arrived they determined the commercial structure to be in Howland’s jurisdiction and Howland firefighters also responded. Firefighters from Warren and Howland were assisted by firefighters from Bazetta. Damage was set at $45,000.
Fire under investigation
YOUNGSTOWN — The cause of a fire at 151 Lincoln Park Drive, where tenants had recently been evicted, is under investigation. Firefighters found the front porch area in flames when they arrived around 11:10 p.m. Wednesday.
The fire extended into the front room and up a wall to the second floor. The front door was open but a sledgehammer had to be used to gain entry through the back door. Damage was set at $8,000.
