Fairfield Twp. prepares for renovations

SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR

COLUMBIANA — Fairfield Township has hired two area companies to complete work at the government center.

At the recommendation of architect Mike Fagan of Olsavsky & Jaminet in Youngstown, the township will pay Vec Systems of Girard $52,547 for roof replacement and USA Concrete of Columbiana $19,519 for concrete replacement.

Trustees Bob Hum, chairman, and Carl Garwood, voted in favor of the move at the township’s Thursday meeting. Trustee Fred Grappy said he could not support the decision because he’s concerned the township could be investing too much money into a building that might not be viable in the next several years.

Fagan told trustees it is his belief the building is a solid structure. He recommended replacing the windows and possibly insulating the walls to save on heating costs.

The work is part of the township’s ongoing effort to renovate the government center, which is on Fairfield School Road. The trustees are considering demolishing a second building at the site, which was once part of the Crestview School District.

The trustees began conducting public meetings at the government center about five years ago, and the township is now looking at moving its daily business operations there.
