PBS 45/49 offers digital TV information

KENT — To help consumers who may be confused about the national digital television conversion, PBS 45/49 has launched a DTV Help Desk. Those who sign up will receive free periodic updates by mail about the digital transition. They can also leave a message should they have a question about the transition, and a PBS 45/49 employee will answer it. The free service is accessible by phone at (877) DTV-4PBS or by e-mail at dtv4pbs@wneo.org.

PBS 45/49 also offers a comprehensive digital transition Web site at pbs4549.org/dtv.htm.

The switch to digital transmission of TV signals will be complete by Feb. 17. After that date, all full-power analog broadcast will cease. Benefits of DTV include movie-quality pictures and sound, more channels and high-definition television to consumers with HD television sets.

Titanic stories sought for upcoming exhibit

PITTSBURGH — As part of “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition,” the Carnegie Science Center is seeking descendants of passengers on the RMS Titanic, and their family stories relating to the 1912 sinking of the renowned ocean liner. The exhibit opens May 24 and runs through Sept. 1.

“Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition” will take visitors back in time to experience the Titanic. It will feature more than 260 authentic artifacts recovered from Titanic’s final resting place, recreations of her rooms and the dramatic stories of her passengers and crew. The final gallery of the exhibition will feature a memorial wall remembering the ship’s 705 survivors, and the 1,523 people who perished in the sinking; and highlighting regional connections to the ship and its survivors.

The Science Center is asking that descendents of Titanic in the region e-mail their family story to Titanic@CarnegieScienceCenter.org. The stories will be used as additional material for visitors to the exhibition, emphasizing local connections to this historic ship.

Tickets for the exhibit are $20 ($15 for ages 3-12) and go on sale today. A separate, timed ticket is required. The exhibit will be open Sunday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. To buy in advance, call (412) 237-3400.
