Airman’s remains returning to Ohio

IMPERIAL, Pa. (AP) — The remains of a World War II airman found atop a glacier last year in California are being flown into Pittsburgh International Airport on the way to burial in Ohio.

The Department of Defense in March identified the remains as those of Ernest Munn of St. Clairsville, Ohio. Munn was 23 when his navigational trainer plane disappeared after takeoff from Sacramento, Calif., in November 1942.

An airport spokeswoman says the remains are arriving Wednesday on a Delta Air Lines flight and that an honor guard will be present.

Backpackers in a remote area of Kings Canyon, east of Fresno, told rangers in August they discovered a decomposed body near an unopened military parachute.

Munn is the second of four airmen aboard the missing plane to be identified.
