YSU readies centennial spring commencement

YOUNGSTOWN — Matthew Ward doesn’t know why he was selected to speak on behalf of the senior class at Youngstown State University’s centennial spring commencement, but he’s honored to have the chance.

“I’ve had lots of great opportunities,” said Ward, a summa cum laude mathematics major with minors in philosophy and physics.

He has high praise for the YSU faculty and programs and is more than pleased with his four years here.

Dr. Nathan Ritchie, chairman of the math department, said each of YSU’s colleges takes a turn at selecting the undergraduate student speaker at commencement, and he recommended Ward “because of his outstanding achievements.”

Founded in 1908, YSU celebrates its 100th anniversary this year with the theme, “A Proud Past, A Promising Future,” a theme that will be at the center of spring commencement as the university honors graduates representing the university’s past and its future.
