Chaney blanks W. Harding in Division I sectional opener


YOUNGSTOWN — Kara Guyer contributed two hits and scored twice as the Chaney High softball team defeated Warren Harding 5-0 Tuesday in a Division I tournament game.

The Cowgirls advance to play Boardman today at 4:30 p.m. at the Fields of Dreams.

Chaney took advantage of five walks to scored three of their runs. Sabrina Nacarato (4-6) scattered four hits with seven strikeouts to pick up the win.

Div. II

HOWLAND — Lakeview defeated Howland, 2-0, advancing to play at Jefferson today at 4:30 p.m.

In the fourth inning, Lakeview’s Jessica Downs singled and Mackenzie Palette moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt.

After Joanna Novotny’s single to left field, Raelynn Burns’ single scored Downs.

Lakeview’s other run scored on an error.

Abbey Bensing (8-3) had seven strikeouts during a five-hitter.

Brigitte Morvay and Downs each had two singles for the Bulldogs (13-6).

For Howland (13-13), Rachel Bixler had a double and single while Jenna Debiec doubled.

Liberty 15, Niles 4

NILES — Shelby Stefanski had four hits while Melissa Dykes hit two triples to drive in three runs.

Katie Greaf’s two hits included a triple as the Leopards advance to play today at Canfield.

For the Red Dragons (8-14), Melyssa Spowart’s three hits included a triple and double. She drove in two runs. Brooke Joseph doubled.
