Poland schedules Memorial Day festivities

POLAND — American Legion Mahoning Valley Post 15 Memorial Day parade and activities begin at 9 a.m. May 26 at the Cortland Street post with a ceremony.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. and travels down College Street, turns right on South Main Street, left of Riverside Drive and into the Riverside Cemetery.

A ceremony will also be conducted on the Main Street Bridge in honor of those lost at sea with full memorial services in the cemetery.

Ken Carano, the Mahoning Regional director for Gov. Ted Strickland, will serve as speaker of the day. Past Post 15 Commander Ed Savel will serve as parade grand marshal.

In case of inclement weather, memorial ceremonies will be in the Poland Middle School Gymnasium.

The opening ceremony honors the four chaplains, who during World War II gave their lifejackets to four others when their ship, the USTA Dorchester, sank after being torpedoed by a German submarine.
