League track meets on tap


Athletes will get ready for upcoming district, regional and state competitions.

It’s final tuneup time this week for the upcoming district, regional and state track and field meets.

Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., the Trumbull Athletic Conference meet is scheduled at Champion. Lakeview High’s boys and girls are defending champs.

Jermaine Collins of Hubbard (14.5 seconds) and (39.3), Ben Moody of Lakeview (14.6) and Anthony Walker of LaBrae (39.6) should make the high and low hurdles close races.

Newton Falls’ Jennifer Bjelac will contend in the 100 hurdles (15.8), 800 (2:25) and teammate KaiCee Kubicina is entered in the shot put (39-81‚Ñ4 ) and discus (130-9).

Lakeview’s Kiley Mathews will compete in the 100 (12.7), 200 (26.4) and 400 (59.5).

The Inter-Tri County league Tier Two meet is scheduled Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Western Reserve High School while the Northeastern Athletic Conference is set the same day at 4 p.m. at Pymatuning Valley.

The Steel Valley Conference meet will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at Chaney High while the Inter-Tri-County Tier One meet will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at East Palestine.

The Metro Athletic Conference meet will be Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Salem’s Reilly Stadium. On the same day, the Federal League meet will be at North Canton Hoover at 4 p.m. while the Northeastern Buckeye Conference meet at Canton South begins at 4:30 p.m.

The ITCL2 event will feature Samantha Hamilton of Jackson-Milton in the 1600 (5:19.1) and the 3200 (11:31.7). Holland Thomas of McDonald will be entered in the 800 (1:58.2) and the 1600 (4:30.9).

Some of the area’s top athletes will be competing in the SVC meet with Mooney’s Scott Johnson (11.1) in the 100, Chaney’s Myke Parker in the 400 (51.47), Ursuline’s Wes Washington in the hurdles, East’s James Allen in the 100 and 200 and Chaney’s Shatasia Walker in both hurdles.

The ITCL1 will feature Crestview’s Mitch See in the 100 (10.8) and 200 (22.5) and United’s Zane Smith in the 200 (22.9) and the 400 (51.46).

Jakob Leon of the Rebels has one of the state’s best efforts in the high jump (6-9).

Mineral Ridge’s Nicole Honsaker will contend in the 100 hurdles (15.4), 300 hurdles (45.4) and long jump (16-9 1/2).

In the MAC meet, Dustin Brode of Canfield will be the athlete to beat in the shot put (55-5) and the discus (151-7). Michael Hudzik of Struthers (146-5) and Stephan Magyar of Canfield (144-3) will contend in the discus.

Audra Frimpong of Canfield will enter the meet with the area’s top time in the 100 hurdles (15.1), 100 (12.4) and 200 (25.8). Amanda Cox of Poland (38-10) and Sarah Brobeck of Salem (38-3) are entered in the shot. Brobeck has the area’s best throw in the discus (138-10).

In the Federal League gathering, Boardman’s Caleb Mathews should contend in the high hurdles (14.8) and 300 hurdles (39.2). His teammates Corey Linsley (581‚Ñ2) and Evan Klepec (167) are entered in the shot and discus. Lauren Agnew of the Spartans will compete in the 1600 (5:27) and 3200 (11:54).

Taylor Kring of West Branch, last year’s Division II state champ in both hurdles, will compete in the NBC meet in the 100 (16.0) and 300 (45.8) hurdles.
