Mooney takes tennis tournament title
BOARDMAN — Cardinal Mooney won the team championship while the Cardinals’ Luka Spahija and Boardman’s Noah Patoray and Adam Antunez won singles titles, at the Spartan High School Tennis Invitational tournament.
Mooney compiled 37 points to outdistance Boardman (31), East Liverpool (21) and Leetonia and Beaver Creek (4 each) in the team competition.
Spahija won the Class A singles title by defeating Sam Kinsey of East Liverpool, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (12-10),
Patoray took Class B by beating teammate Jared Moore, 10-9 (6), while Antunez swept Class C by topping teammate Kevin Ngo, 10-6.
Fitch tennis
AUSTINTOWN — Four members of the Austintown Fitch High tennis teams received recognition from the Ohio Tennis Coaches’ Association.
Becky Ortenzio, Amanda Becerra and Derek Frost received Gold Racquet Awards for maintaining a 3.75 GPA for six semesters.
Jill Renda won a Silver Racquet Award for maintaining a 3.75 GPA for four semesters.
Kent beats Akron
AKRON – The Kent State baseball team scored seven times in the second inning and went on to defeat Akron 19-5 Sunday at Lee Jackson Field.
A pair of solo home runs by Greg Rohan (South Range) and Conor Egan started the KSU second and a three-run shot off the bat of Doug Sanders capped the outburst.
The Zips are 24-21, 8-10 Mid-American Conf.
Drew Turocy (Canfield) fell to 4-3 on the year in taking the loss for the Zips.

Wright St. wins Horizon softball title
CHICAGO – Wright State Univ. shut out Cleveland St. 2-0 in the tournament final of the Horizon League Championship.
The Raiders successfully defended their 2007 tournament title and earned their third championship crown in six years.
Muskingum advances
GLASSBORO, N.J. — Kari Hoying homered twice and knocked in three runs to lead Muskingum to a 3-2 win over Denison in the deciding game of the NCAA Division III softball championship’s first-round Glassboro Regional on Sunday.
Hoying also scored twice for the top-seeded Muskies, while Jamie Echelberger and Mallory Hay each had two hits. It was the third win of the day for Muskingum, which first beat Mount Union 5-3 to emerge from the loser bracket and play Denison for the regional title.
In their first game, Muskingum scored 12 runs in the first inning and went on to beat the Big Red 14-1 in a game stopped after five innings.
Diving Grand Prix
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — China did not reign supreme Sunday at the USA Diving Grand Prix, giving hope to the other nations preparing for the Beijing Olympics.
On the final day of competition, the Australians took home two gold medals and a silver, with Russia winning the only other gold medal awarded.
The Chinese were shut out of gold for the first time in the four-day event but still managed to lead all countries in the medal count with seven — three gold, two silver and two bronze.
Australia and United States each finished with five medals overall, with the U.S. capturing four silver medals.
Basketball violation
LOS ANGELES — A former associate of USC freshman guard O.J. Mayo claims the basketball star received thousands of dollars in cash and other gifts from an event promoter over the past four years that would violate NCAA rules, ESPN reported Sunday.
Louis Johnson told ESPN’s “Outside the Lines,” that Rodney Guillory, a Los Angeles-based event promoter, gave Mayo about $30,000 and other benefits while he attended high school and his sole season at USC. Mayo has decided to forgo his sophomore year and enter the NBA draft.
Mayo attended Cincinnati’s North College Hill for three years, leading the school to state basketball titles in 2005 and 2006 before transferring to Huntington, W.V., High School in 2006.
