F & S overcomes history to win at Wedgewood
AUSTINTOWN — After finishing low in the standings for the last 20 years, the F & S bowling team won the Wednesday Night UAW-Township League championship at Wedgewood Lanes.
To win the title in the highly competitive league with the likes of Adam Barta and Johnny Petraglia Jr., F & S defeated Donatelli Strikers twice.
F & S members are Atty. Louis Schiavoni, Atty. Herman Carach, Scott Summers, Joe Pavel, Fred Carnivale, Jim DeMetra, Rich Scudier and Gary Renstrom.
Carnivale finished with top average of 217, followed by Summers’ 211.
Donatelli won the first half and third quarter while F&S won fourth quarter.
In roll-offs between third and fourth, F&S beat Donatelli for the second half crown, then faced Donatelli again for the championship.
F & S won the first two games by slim margins, then got buried and fell behind in total points.
An extra game was necessary to finally decide the championship.
Carnivale didn’t compete in the last game due to illness, so Carach — a 181 bowler — filled in and produced a 244 single to sway the outcome.
The viability of the UAW-Township is in question after the league shrank from 26 teams in 2006-07 to 13 for 2007-08.
