East softball forfeits to Fitch

AUSTINTOWN — The East High softball team has forfeited Monday’s Division I tournament game against Fitch.

Fitch advances to play at Ashtabula Lakeside on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Chaney Wall of Fame

YOUNGSTOWN — The Chaney High School Wall of Fame just became two bricks stronger.

The Wall of Fame committee, along with the Chaney Athletic Department, is inducting former Cowboy football coach Ron Berdis and Brad Smith of the New York Jets onto the wall.

Berdis spent 30 years coaching football at Chaney and retired as the winningest football coach there.

Smith played quarterback at Chaney and at the Univ. of Missouri before moving to wide receiver with the Jets.

YOUNGSTOWN —Fans planning to attend the Kelly Pavlik-Gary Lockett fight on June 7 in Atlantic City can buy a round-trip bus ticket for $100. The bus leaves at 5 a.m. Friday and returns Sunday, with the bus departing at 8 a.m.

Mixed doubles event

Golf fund-raiser

LOWELLVILLE — First Book Mahoning Valley will hold its first fund-raising golf outing Aug. 16 at Bedford Trails Golf Course. Golfers and hole sponsors are needed, and donations will be accepted. For more information E-mail fbmvgolf@yahoo.com.

First Book is a nonprofit agency whose goal is giving children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. Since being founded in 1992, First Book has distributed over 10,000 books to area children.

Records broken

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Jodi Bodo broke two school records and freshman Desiree Finley surpassed one mark to highlight the Bethany College track and field teams at the Allegheny (Pa.) College Invitational.

Bodo reset records which had stood since 1997. In the 200, Bodo broke the tape in 26.80, eclipsing the record set by Errone Quader (26.94) 11 years ago.

The other record to fall was in the 400, as Bodo came in with a time of under a minute which bettered the previous school record of 1:00.34 established by Quader in 1997.

Finley broke the standard in the 400 hurdles which had stood since 1993, with a time of 1:06.20.

Wrestling highlights

REYNOLDSBURG — Rob Reed, 119 pounds, a freshman at Canfield High School, took first place in the state Greco Roman Wrestling Tournament at Watkins Memorial High School Saturday.

Reed beat out a field of 16 for the state title.

Junior Braylin Bellio, 119, took second place in his age class.

The two athletes will compete in the National Greco Roman Tournament at Fargo, North Dakota in July.

Smith a winner

WATERLOO, Iowa — Jessica Smith, sophomore at Fitch School, competed for the Canfield Team Lennox Club, middleweight, won a regional wrestling champion in the College Division Saturday and has qualified for the Olympic Trails in Las Vegas in June.

She competed against 12 athletes in the regional event.

Iroquois Steeplechase

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Good Night Shirt took the lead a few yards from the start and held it for three miles over 18 hurdles to win the $150,000 Grade I Iroquois Steeplechase at Percy Warner Park on Saturday.

The win for last year’s steeplechaser of the year was his second win in Grade I races this season and vaulted him into the lead to repeat as champion.

After forcefully striking the last fence when he won the $100,000 Georgia Cup last month, Good Night Shirt was almost flawless over the Iroquois hurdles when he posted a 71‚Ñ2-length win over Sweet Shanni, the only mare in the race.

Seaside Retreat wins

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Seaside Retreat beat favorite Crested by two lengths Saturday in the $60,000 feature race at Churchill Downs.

Seaside Retreat, a 5-year-old gelded son of King Cugat, covered the 1 1-8 miles on firm turf in 1:49.72.

The colt, owned by W.S. Farish and trained by Mark Casse, was ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan.

Seaside Retreat was fifth in the field of six entering the stretch. Bridgmohan swung the colt to the outside and caught the leaders at the eighth pole before pulling away.

He paid $19.40, $6.40 and $3.60. Crested returned $2.60 and $2.10. Embossed paid $2.40 to show.

Fashion statement

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Laura Wilkinson made a fashion statement in her pink bikini.

The Chinese let the diving speak for them.

Wang Hao won the women’s 10-meter platform at the USA Diving Grand Prix on Saturday, then teamed with Kang Li to take the synchronized event off the high board.

Wang dominated the individual final, finishing with a score of 420.30 points for five dives. Wilkinson, who won platform gold in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, was a distant second with 360.80.

Bradley wins title

NOTTINGHAM, England — Timothy Bradley knocked down Junior Witter in the sixth round on the way to winning the WBC light-welterweight title Saturday night on a split decision.

The unbeaten American, who had never fought as a pro outside of California, will take home the belt after his big punches overcame a 10-year age gap against the experienced British fighter whose only previous loss in 39 fights was eight years ago.
