W. Reserve nips Ursuline in 8 innings; Canfield’s Sulick shuts out Niles, 15-0


BERLIN CENTER — Heather Monoski’s single scored Presley Commings from second base with the winning run in the last of the eighth inning Friday to give the Western Reserve High softball team a 1-0 win over Ursuline.

Commings reached second base with her second double of the game.

Elizabeth Srock pitched a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts for Western Reserve, out-dueling Casey Lower who threw a six-hitter. Srock is 7-1, Lower 12-5.

Chelsea Korda added two singles for the Blue Devils (13-7).

Ursuline is 14-5.

Canfield 15, Niles 0

CANFIELD — Lauren Sulick (6-2-1) struck out eight while Melissa West, Melanie West and Bianca Biondillo had over-the fence home runs for Canfield, which completed its Metro Athletic Conference schedule with an 11-1 record. The Cards’ league loss was to Poland.

Melanie West knocked in four runs while Biondillo provided two RBIs and Melissa West one for the Cards (16-4-1).

Ashley Bolina had two hits and two RBIs while Amanda Colonna also knocked in two runs.

Niles is 8-13, 4-8.

United 9, Salem 3

HANOVERTON — Mikenzie Clark had a double and single and scored twice while Jordan Hissom and Kate Malloy added a single apiece for Salem (3-17).

Boardman 11, Warren Harding 1

WARREN — Alexandra DiDomenico slammed two triples and a single and drove in two runs. She also earned the pitching win with relief help from Kelsey Ford and Julie Sokol as Boardman rolled behind a 17-hit attack.

DiDomenico, Ford and Sokol combined to pitch a three-hitter.

Brooke Meenachan had three singles and two RBIs and Lizzie Padgitt three singles and one RBI to also lead Bordman (13-6).

Meshalay Brown rapped an RBI-double for Harding.

Struthers 8, Springfield 4

NEW MIDDLETOWN — The Wildcats collected 15 hits and scored seven runs in the middle innings of the contest.

Winning pitcher Ashley Baron hit two home runs, single and drove in two runs.

Halle Skook hit three singles and scored a run and Ellen Becker hit a pair of singles, scored twice and drove in a run. Springfield (11-10) was sparked by Ashley Davis who hit two singles, scored once and drove in a run. Rebecca Evan hit a double, single and drove in a run.

Losing pitcher Andria Lyons hit a pair of singles.

Baseball

Chaney 9, Youngstown Christian 7

YOUNGSTOWN — Dan Fanzo hit a two-run home run for the Cowboys in the bottom of the nine inning for the victory. The Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead and were out in front 7-5 after the sixth, but Chaney rallied to tie it in the seventh.

Fanzo also hit a double and single for the Cowboys (7-17). Dustin Guyer hit a pair of singles. Ed Gonda led the Eagles with two hits.

Columbiana 3, East Palestine 2

EAST PALESTINE — The Clippers (11-12, 7-7 Inter Tri-County League Tier One) scored the winning run in the top of the fifth inning.

The two schools each scored two runs in the first inning. Eric Kissell hit a pair of singles for Columbiana, while Tommy Powers hit two singles for the Bulldogs (15-6, 10-4).

Leetonia 14, Jackson-Milton 4

LEETONIA — Jackson-Milton (1-21, 1-13 ITCL2) completed regular season play with Tommy Smith hitting two doubles and a single to drive in three runs.

The Bears, ahead 9-4, put the game out of reach as it scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning. Pat Russell hit a home run and a double for Leetonia.

Mathews 10, Maplewood 0

CORTLAND — Collin Bowser pitched a one hitter with 11 strikeouts to pick up the win. John Scudier hit two doubles and a single to spark the Mustangs (16-3-1, 9-2 NAC). Phil Ciprian and Kyle Davis each had two hits.

Late Thursday

Lowellville 11, Mineral Ridge 5

STRUTHERS — Ray Scharrer entered with one out in the second inning, facing a bases-loaded situation with the score tied, 3-3.

Scharrer induced a groundball double play, then pitched a two-hitter the rest of the way for Lowellville (16-5) at Cene Park.

It was the first high school victory for Scharrer, a junior.

Jim Sudon had two doubles, Tony Pope had a triple and single and Anthony Alfano had two singles for Lowellville.

Guy Ferguson doubled for Ridge (9-11).
