mlb roundup Friday’s other games

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Tigers 6, Yankees 5

DETROIT — Kenny Rogers pitched into the seventh inning and Ivan Rodriguez had three hits and drove in a pair of runs to help Detroit. Rodriguez drove in a pair of runs and Rogers held the Yankees to two runs before New York scored three runs off Todd Jones in the ninth, but still lost for the third time in four games. Detroit won for the second time in eight games since sweeping the Yankees in a three-game series in New York. It was the Tigers’ first sweep of at least three games at Yankee Stadium since 1966. Kei Igawa’s season debut was a forgettable one for New York. He lasted just three-plus innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits. In the third inning, Rodriguez drove in a run with an infield double, and Magglio Ordonez and Gary Sheffield also had run-scoring hits to give Detroit a 4-1 lead. The Tigers scored two more in the fourth, on left-fielder Hideki Matsui’s error and Placido Polanco’s RBI single. Jason Giambi homered in the second off Rogers, giving him 184 with the Yankees, passing Tommy Henrich and tying Charlie Keller for 16th place in team history. New York added three runs off reliever Todd Jones in the ninth, on Cano’s RBI groundout, Jeter’s run scoring single and Bobby Abreu’s RBI double before Shelley Duncan lined out to center to end the game.

Rangers 4, Athletics 0

ARLINGTON, Texas — Scott Feldman and three relievers combined for Texas’ third consecutive shutout and Brandon Boggs drove in three runs to end the A’s four-game winning streak. Feldman (1-1) pitched six innings, stretching Texas’ scoreless streak to 28 consecutive innings. Jamey Wright threw a perfect seventh before Joaquin Benoit and C.J. Wilson finished it off for 31 in a row. The last time a major league team had three consecutive shutouts was Florida in August 2005. Minnesota was the last American League team to accomplish that feat, in July 2004. It was the third straight start for rookie left-hander Greg Smith (2-2) in which the Athletics failed to score any runs behind him.

Rays 2, Angels 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — James Shields pitched a one-hitter and Evan Longoria’s two-run, ninth-inning homer snapped a scoreless tie to lift the Rays. Shields (4-2) rebounded from the second-shortest outing of his career to post his second shutout in his past three starts. The 26-year-old right-hander limited the Angels to Brandon Wood’s one-out single in the third and retired the last 17 batters he faced after hitting Erick Aybar with a pitch in the fourth. Angels starter Jon Garland allowed no runs and four hits in eight innings. He walked three and struck out two before being replaced by Justin Speier (0-2), who gave up a leadoff single to B.J. Upton in the ninth.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Cubs 3, Diamondbacks 1

CHICAGO — Ted Lilly gave up another homer to Chris Young, but still led the Cubs over Arizona in the first meeting between the teams since the Diamondbacks’ first-round sweep in last year’s playoffs. Young homered off Lilly in Game 2 last October in Phoenix during Arizona’s 8-4 win, prompting Lilly to slam his glove on the pitcher’s mound in frustration. This time Lilly surrendered a first-inning solo homer to Young, then gave up just two hits over the next six innings. Lilly (3-4) struck out 10 against the team with the best record in the majors and drove in the tying run with a fifth-inning single. Carlos Marmol got out of the eighth with the help of a strange double play when Arizona’s Eric Byrnes was called for interference when his backswing apparently struck catcher Geovany Soto. Kerry Wood pitched the ninth for his sixth save in nine chances. Dan Haren (4-2) yielded two runs and five hits in seven innings for Arizona.

Brewers 4, Cardinals 3

MILWAUKEE — Rickie Weeks hit a bases loaded, two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give Milwaukee the victory over the St. Louis Cardinals and snap the Brewers’ six-game losing streak. After looking lethargic most of the game, the Brewers came alive after Cardinals closer Jason Isringhausen recorded two outs on the first two pitches in the ninth. After Isringhausen (1-4) got the two quick outs, J.J. Hardy singled, pinch hitter Gabe Kapler hit a blooper to right and Isringhausen walked Jason Kendall to set up Weeks.

Marlins 7, Nationals 3

WASHINGTON — Ricky Nolasco joined first-place Florida’s win parade with six strong innings, and Luis Gonzalez passed the 1,400 career RBIs mark with a bases-loaded double. Nolasco (2-3) broke a personal three-game losing streak, getting his first win in nearly a month, as the Marlins ran their winning streak to a season-high five games. Florida (21-14) is seven games over .500 for the first time since September 2005. The Marlins blew the game open with a four-run sixth, taking advantage of a sudden spate of wildness from Nationals starter Tim Redding (4-3). Redding walked three of the last six batters he faced, including Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla to load the bases before Gonzalez doubled off Jesus Colome.
