IMPEACHMENT

IMPEACHMENT

The process

Ohio’s impeachment process:

Ohio House of Representatives leads an inquiry to determine the impeachable act or acts to be brought against an elected official

Articles of impeachment are drawn up that read like an indictment

A House floor vote is taken on each article, with a majority vote (50 of 99 representatives) required to send the charge to the Ohio Senate

OhioSenate holds a public trial on the articles it is sent from the House, with House appointees acting as prosecutors and senators acting in judgment. Each senator must swear an oath to uphold law and justice.

ASenate floor vote is taken on each article, with a two-thirds majority (22 of 33 senators) resulting in the elected official’s conviction on the charge and a vote of less than that resulting in his acquittal.

If the official is convicted, the Senate may remove him from office and bar him from future service, but can levy no other penalties.
