Fan Fest set

NILES — As part of their 10th anniversary, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers have planned a fan fest event at Eastwood Field on May 17 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Raiders get Jones

HOWLAND — Eric Jones, a senior at Howland High School, will play football at Mount Union in the fall.

Jones, a 6-foot, 200-pound linebacker, received all-state honors and was picked the conference player of the year.

Dorn picks Mount

CANFIELD — Ryan Dorn, a senior at Canfield High School, will join the Mount Union College football team in the fall.

Dorn is 6-3, 255. He played offensive tackle at Canfield and earned all-league honors.

Turocy gets win

AKRON — A grand slam by John Turk keyed a five-run fifth as the Univ. of Akron baseball team outslugged Kent State, 15-7.

Turk lined the first pitch he saw from KSU reliever Steve Ross over the fence in right center field to give the Zips the lead.

Akron starter Frank Turocy (Canfield) picked up the win for the Zips despite allowing seven runs, though just three after the first inning, in a complete-game effort.

Turocy (6-2) used a career-high 152 pitches and struck out seven.

Browns in scramble

LOWELLVILE — The Lowellville Gridiron Classic golf scramble will be May 17 at Bedford Trails with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.

The scramble, which is open to the public, will consist of competition between four-man teams, with each squad including one player from the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers or someone from the area with a NFL connection.

Entry fee is $150 per golfer, which includes lunch, dinner, refreshments and hole prizes. More information may be obtained by calling Bedford Trails (330-536-2234), Ralph Moore (330-509-2974) or Larry Novak (330-720-2364).

An autograph session is set from 5-6 p.m.

Benefit auction

LEETONIA —The Columbiana Clippers Football Moms group is holding a benefit auction today at 5 p.m. at the Boardman Auction Gallery, 110 Madison St., Leetonia.

Items include sports memorabilia such as 1956 Cleveland Browns team photo and A.J. Hawk OSU football.

Also available are antiques, ceramics, furniture, paintings and gift certificates.

An auction preview is at 4 p.m.

Binko is selected

PAINESVILLE — Lake Erie College junior Brittney Binko (Warren JFK) has been named to the second team of the Louisville Slugger National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Div. III All-Central Region Team. Binko, who was conference co-player of the year, hit .435 with a school record of 47 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .702 as the team’s leading hitter.

Judah fight canceled

Sugar Shane Mosley’s fight with Zab Judah May 31 was canceled Thursday after Judah seriously injured his arm in an accidental fall.

Judah (36-5, 25 KOs), the former undisputed welterweight champion hoping for a comeback, severely cut his right forearm and needed 50 stitches to close the wounds, which will keep him out of training for four weeks.

Spadafora released

ALBION, Pa. — Former IBF lightweight champion Paul Spadafora was released from the state prison and won’t face charges he violated his parole.

Defense attorney Ken Bickel said officials decided not to file parole violation charges against him.

Spadafora was incarcerated last week after being accused of violating a protection from abuse order by meeting his former fiancee Nadine Russo on April 29 at an Edinboro motel.
