AMERICAN LEAGUE

Red Sox 5, Tigers 1

DETROIT — Josh Beckett had eight strikeouts, including the 1,000th of his career and Kevin Youkilis hit another home run at spacious Comerica Park to lead Boston over Detroit. Beckett (4-2) gave up six hits and a run in seven innings and Youkilis hit his third home run in two games, giving him eight in Detroit. He hasn’t hit more than two outside Fenway Park. The Red Sox took three of four in the series from the Tigers and have won six of their past seven, while Detroit has lost six of seven. Justin Verlander (1-6) gave up five runs on nine hits in six innings. He struck out five, but allowed Jason Varitek’s two-run single and Jacoby Ellsbury’s sacrifice fly in the second inning, as well as Youkilis’ two-run drive in the fifth.

Orioles 4, Royals 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Daniel Cabrera threw a three-hitter to remain perfect against Kansas City, Nick Markakis backed him with a three-run homer, and Baltimore snapped a five-game losing streak. Cabrera (3-1) struck out seven and walked one in his fifth career complete game and first since Sept. 28, 2006 against the Yankees. In seven career starts against the Royals, the right-hander who led the AL last year with 18 losses, is 4-0.

White Sox 6, Twins 2

CHICAGO — Jermaine Dye homered for the third straight game and Juan Uribe added a go-ahead two-run drive in the fifth for the White Sox. John Danks (3-3) made it through five innings, giving up six hits and two runs, and Chicago won for just the second time in nine games. Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire returned after missing five games following the death of his brother, but his first game back was an abbreviated one. He was ejected for the 37th time in his career and first time this season in the sixth inning by plate umpire Doug Eddings after a double steal by the White Sox.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Diamondbacks 8, Phillies 3

PHOENIX — Brandon Webb became the first pitcher to win his first eight starts in three years, tossing his 13th career complete game to help Arizona beat Philadelphia. The 2006 NL Cy Young Award winner struck out four and didn’t walk a batter in his first complete game of the year. He hit one batter. Webb (8-0) became the first pitcher to win his first eight starts since Jon Garland of the Chicago White Sox in 2005 and the first in the NL since Pedro Martinez for Montreal in 1997. Webb stifled the Phillies on three hits through eight innings before allowing two runs and three hits in the ninth. Chris Young hit a two-run drive, his second homer in as many games, and Chris Snyder had a two-run double for the Diamondbacks. Justin Upton added a solo home run for Arizona.

Rockies 9, Cardinals 3

DENVER — Matt Holliday had four singles, Jorge De La Rosa scattered five hits over 52‚Ñ3 innings and Colorado beat St. Louis to salvage a split in their four-game series. Omar Quintanilla added a career-high three hits and Garrett Atkins finished 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBIs for the Rockies.

Braves 5, Padres 4

ATLANTA — The Braves finally won a one-run game when Matt Diaz hit a bases-loaded single in the ninth inning. Atlanta was the first team since the 2000 Houston Astros to lose its first nine one-run games. The Braves were the only team in the major leagues without a one-run victory. Atlanta, which trailed 4-1 after five innings, has won six straight games, all at home. The Padres, who lost their fourth straight, committed three errors that led to four unearned runs.

Marlins 7, Brewers 2

MIAMI — Matt Treanor achieved a career high in RBIs with one swing, hitting a three-run homer to help Florida complete a three-game sweep. Jorge Cantu also homered for the first-place Marlins, who won their fourth game in a row and matched their best start after 34 games (20-14). The Brewers lost their sixth game in a row, their longest losing streak this year.
