YSU Planetarium plans events for Astronomy Day
YOUNGSTOWN — “Bringing Astronomy to the People” is the theme of Astronomy Day at the Ward Beecher Planetarium at Youngstown State University from 2 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
The event is sponsored by the planetarium, the Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society and the Astronomical League.
There will be hands-on activities and demonstrations, and the planetarium will show “Seeing in the Dark” throughout the day.
There also will be telescope observing throughout the day with solar filter during daylight hours and viewing of stars and planets after dark. “Black Holes: The Other Side of Infinity” will be shown at 8 p.m.
Golf outing to raise funds
LOWELLVILLE — First Book Mahoning Valley will have its first fund-raising golf outing Aug. 16 at Bedford Trails Golf Course. Golfers and hole sponsors are needed, and donations will be accepted. For more information e-mail fbmvgolf@yahoo.com. First Book is a nonprofit agency whose goal is giving children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. Since being founded in 1992, First Book has distributed more than 10,000 books to area children.
Mother’s Day plant sale
FARRELL, Pa. — The UPMC Horizon Community Health Foundation will have its annual Mother’s Day plant sale beginning today through Friday. The sale is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day at the hospital campuses in Farrell and Greenville.
Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted. Proceeds benefit community projects the foundation sponsors.
Shenango fire reminders
CLARK, Pa. — Because of recent dry conditions, visitors to Shenango Lake are advised to use caution when building fires, the Army Corps of Engineers announced.
Designated areas such as fire rings or grills should be used to prevent grass and wildfires. Burning on government property is allowed only in such designated areas. Call the “Corps Watch” hot line at (866) 413-7970 with any concerns or wildfire information.
