Ursuline baseball, Mooney softball claim SVC crowns
STRUTHERS — Ursuline senior Robert Switka had 11 strikeouts during a two-hitter that enabled the Irish to defeat Chaney 2-0 on Wednesday and capture the Steel Valley Conference baseball title with a 5-0 record.
Senior Nick McGahagan doubled, while senior Nick McCartney, junior Dan Baco and senior Mark Lapikas had a single apiece for Ursuline (16-5).
Joe Balog and Dan Fanzo had the only hits for Chaney (6-17, 2-3 SVC).
Mooney 14, Harding 7
YOUNGSTOWN — Drew Fitzpatrick had a triple, double, two singles and four RBIs and Anthony Franceschelli added a double, two singles and three RBIs to spark Cardinal Mooney (19-4, 4-1 SVC).
Bob Herberger added a double and two singles for the Cardinals.
Bob Pewman had two RBIs for Harding.
Poland 5, Niles 0
POLAND — Trent Vallinger tossed a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts, while Matt Pitzulo added a homer, a double and two RBIs for Poland (11-6, 8-2 Metro Athletic Conference). Kevin Koval, Sean Gabriel and Drew Petro all added two hits.
Niles is 6-6, 4-8.
Struthers 15, Salem 13
STRUTHERS — Mike Vitucci went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run and three RBIs to lead Struthers (14-10) in a game that featured three homers and 13 extra base hits. Sean O’Brien and Brian Palmer each added two hits, including a homer.
Dan Fortney went 5-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Salem (9-10), while Zac O’Brien went 3-for-4 with a homer and four runs scored.
Springfield 15, South Range 6
NORTH LIMA — Todd Kibby had three hits and three RBIs and Dylan Dejane added two hits and four RBIs to lead Springfield, which took a 10-0 lead. Bryan Visingardi also had three hits, while Mike Sferra and Travis Richey each added two for the Tigers (19-5, 12-1 Inter Tri-County League Tier One).
Isaac Melnick and Gerrad Rohan each had two hits for South Range (8-14, 3-10).
Softball
WARREN — Mooney freshman Jamie Clausen struck out a career-high 11 batters, tossing a three-hitter to lead the Cardinals past Warren Harding 12-1 in five innings on Wednesday, clinching their third straight Steel Valley Conference softball title.
Mooney (17-5, 5-0) has won at least 17 games the past six years. It won the league outright last season and shared the title with Ursuline and Warren JFK last year.
Christina Hrehor added three hits and Krissy Cormell had two for Mooney. Clausen (6-2) walked four batters and the three hits were all singles.
Warren JFK 16, East 2
YOUNGSTOWN — Junior Morgan Piacquadio had 10 strikeouts during a three-hitter at Pemberton.
Junior Rachel Pico had a bases-loaded triple, while sophomore Gina Gelsomino had a home run, triple and single for two RBIs for the Eagles (13-3).
Leishlean Delgada had two singles, while Jahaira Andujar had one for East.
Poland 15, Niles 0
NILES — Senior Liz Maher gave up two hits over four innings and sophomore Jordan Palumbo pitched a hitless fifth.
Allyson Kennedy had a triple, double and single for five RBIs and the senior scored three times for Poland (16-6, 9-2 MAC).
Allie Patton had a triple and two singles, Palumbo had two singles and senior Emma Brenoel had two singles, two RBIs and scored three times.
Lindsey Dodgson had a double and Courtney Christie singled for Niles (8-12, 4-7 MAC).
Canfield 9, Howland 4
CANFIELD — Tricia Bettura had two hits and three RBIs and also picked up the mound win for Canfield.
Brittany Danilov added two hits and Rachel Melewski tripled and singled.
Jenna Debiec had two doubles and two RBIs and Taylor Hill tripled, singled and drove in two for Howland.
Hubbard 3, Campbell 2
HUBBARD — Kara Egelsky (11-1) struck out eight batters in 2 2/3 innings with one walk to pick up the win in relief for Hubbard (15-5, 11-1). Heather Shadden had three hits for the Eagles.
Jennifer Bednarik and Erica Melnik combined to hold Hubbard to three runs.
Springfield 7, South Range 5
NORTH LIMA — Andria Lyons had three singles and two RBIs and Breanne Mincher a double, two singles and one RBI to lead Springfield, which rallied for three runs in the fifth inning for a 7-5 lead.
Erica Burky pitched a nine-hitter with five strikeouts for Springfield (10-9, 6-4 ITCL Tier One).
Autumn Carter socked a three-run homer for South Range,(10-9, 4-5 ITCL Tier One), while Madison Yanek contributed three singles and one RBI,
Champion 6, Girard 1
GIRARD — Amanda Sain pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks to lead Champion (13-5, 11-2 TAC).
Sain (5-1) bested Katie Noday, who pitched an eight-hitter for Girard (6-14, 2-11 TAC).
Sain was backed by Ashley Rable’s two singles.
Chelsea Guerrieri had two singles for Girard.

Southern 10, Wellsville 7
SALINEVILLE — Winning pitcher Marla Pitts hit two doubles for Southern to drive in two runs. She scored three times.
Taylor Kelm’s two hits included a homer and she had two runs scored and two RBIs. Jona French’s two hits included a double as she drove in three runs.
