SHARON, Pa. — The Mercer County Humane Society is seeking justice for a pony that was abused and killed in its pasture.
The reward is now $6,000 and likely to rise for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of whoever killed 10-year-old Kahlua last week, said Sandi Drabick, Humane Society director.
The pony, which was blind, was found dead April 30 by its owner, Tory Morgan of Sharon, when she arrived to feed it at the pasture she leases on Bethel-New Wilmington Road, Drabick said. Four other horses in the pasture were not injured.
It appeared from the injuries that the pony, which was very gentle, had been dragged by a rope behind a vehicle, Drabick said, possibly the night or evening before it was found. Both back legs were broken, she said.
It appears that tire tracks in the pasture belong to an ATV, she said.
She said the pony’s case is especially poignant because of its disability.
“Animals are helpless, but he was very helpless,” she said, adding that the pony likely did not die right away and was left to suffer.
Drabick said the reward offer has prompted many calls, and some have resulted in good leads. State police are working on the case, she said.
The Humane Society donated $2,500 toward the reward, she said, and the Humane Society of the United States donated $2,500. An animal rescue group in New York City called Rescue Ink donated $1,000, she said.
The Humane Society is still taking donations for the reward. Checks can be mailed to Drabick’s attention at P.O. Box 1046, Hermitage, Pa. 16148.
