Officials to OK pacts to aid pupils

STAFF REPORT

WARREN — The Trumbull County commissioners are expected to approve two contracts today to help pupils of needy families who are truant and delinquent.

Thomas Mahoney, director of the county department of job and family services, asked the commissioners during their Tuesday work session to approve a contract with the United Methodist Community Center in Youngstown not to exceed $16,500.

The money will be used to help pupils in the fifth through 10th grades throughout the county who have been identified as in need of services to curtail truancy and delinquency.

It also will be used to provide assistance to needy families so that the children may be cared for in their homes or in the homes of relatives.

A similar contract not to exceed $10,000 with the Alliance Community Outreach Program Inc. of Warren also is expected to be approved. Mahoney said he expected pupils in the fifth through 12th grades in Warren schools to use the service because of its proximity to the program, although it’s open to all county pupils in needy families.

Both programs will be funded by the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families/Prevention, Retention and Contingency program rather than the county general fund, Mahoney added.
