Hubbard gains share of TAC title
Bo Slemons and Mike Backes led the Eagles to their 17th win, 4-1, over Brookfield.
BROOKFIELD — Bo Slemons hit a solo homer and drove in another run with a single Tuesday to lead the Hubbard High baseball team to a 4-1 victory over Brookfield.
The win gave the Eagles (17-5, 12-1) a tie for first place in the Trumbull Athletic Conference.
Matt Shelton doubled and scored on Slemons’ hit. He also had a two-run single.
Winning pitcher Mike Backes (4-1) tossed a two-hitter, striking out nine and walking three.
Friday, Hubbard plays at Champion to settle the TAC race.
For the Warriors, Nick Black and Pat Mulligan singled.
Girard 11, LaBrae 5
GIRARD — Winning pitcher Marty Brinker (4-1) contributed two hits and two RBIs for the Indians (15-8, 11-3 TAC). Nick Devore and Chris Weibel had two hits; one of Devore’s was a double.
LaBrae’s Alex Warne had three hits including a double. Todd Collins delivered two hits.
Canton GlenOak 7, Fitch 5
AUSTINTOWN — T.J. Sutton rapped an RBI-single and Matt Yingling’s bunt squeezed home a run to highlight a six-run seventh inning, enabling GlenOak to overcome Fitch’s 3-1 lead.
Sutton and Tom Balla finished with two singles and as many RBIs apiece to lead GlenOak (4-15, 2-7 FL).
Mike Olenych socked a two-run homer and Nick Wiery a two-run triple to lead Fitch (9-7, 6-3 FL), while Andrew Warren added two singles.
Yingling got the mound win in relief.
Jackson 10, Boardman 2
BOARDMAN — A three-run first inning and five more in the fifth was the big difference as Jackson notched its ninth straight Federal League victory and it is 14-3 overall. Sean Paul hit a home run, double and single and scored three times for the Polar Bears.
Josh Stalnaker hit three singles. Dan Kubala hit a home run and double for the Spartans (13-7, 6-3).
Poland 11, Campbell 1
CAMPBELL — Winning pitcher Marc Carlozzi allowed one hit in the six innings he worked for the Bulldogs (10-6, 7-2 Metro Athletic Conference).
Matt Pitzulo’s four hits included a triple and double. Drew Petro’s three hits included a triple and double. Kevin Koval singled twice.
For Campbell, Niko Magnolia singled.
Struthers 16, Newton Falls 1
NEWTON FALLS — Freshman Joe Diloreto (4-1) scattered three hits over five innings.
Sean O’Brien had three hits and scored three times. Mike Vitucci’s three hits included two doubles. Jake Thomas contributed three hits including a double.
Springfield 11, Lisbon 1
LISBON — Springfield (18-5, 11-1 ITCL Tier One) scored six runs in the first inning and cruised to the victory although it was out hit by Lisbon (5-14, 5-9) 12-9. Travis Richey (5-0) pitched a complete game to pick up the win for the Tigers. Todd Kibby hit a grand slam home run in the first inning and he also had two singles. Erik Birmingham hit a pair of singles. Dustin Borg hit three singles, while Lucas Rambo, Dana Rose and Josh Jackson each hat two for the Blue Devils.
Crestview 11, United 1
NEW WATERFORD — Crestview (7-16, 6-8) Freshman Tommy Marnejon pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts to pick up the win for the Rebels in the ITCL Tier One contest . Carter Hill went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles and he drove in two runs. Josh Orr hit three singles, while Brian Peppel hit two singles and drove in two runs. United slipped to 11-8, 8-6.
Cornerstone Christian 7, Youngstown Christian 3
YOUNGSTOWN — With the score tied 2-2, Cornerstone Christian (10-6) scored a run in the fourth inning, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh to prevail in the contest played at Pemberton Park. Jim Callari hit a double and two singles. Nathaniel Setnick hit a pair of singles for the Eagles (8-7).
South Range 16-10, Mineral Ridge 7-18
NORTH LIMA — Isaac Melnick’s grand slam homer in the ninth inning snapped a 7-7 tie to give South Range an 11-7 lead, and the Raiders completed a nine-run rally to win the first game Tuesday that was a continuation of eight innings played Monday.
Joe Melnick contributed a triple, double, two singles and five RBIs to also lead South Range, while Gerrad Rohan added four singles and one RBI.
Evan Walton had two singles and four RBIs for Mineral Ridge.
In Tuesday’s second game, Ryan Anderson had four singles and two RBIs to lead Mineral Ridge (10-3 ITCL Tier One).
Isaac Melnick had a double, two singles and four RBIs to spark South Range (8-13, 3-9).
Howland 14, Salem 3
SALEM — Matt Preston rapped a homer and single and had three RBIs while Adam Shrodek, and Matt Schultz combined to pitch a six-hitter for Howland. Shrodek now is 2-2.
Vinnie Vitullo and Jared Kirin each had two singles and two RBIs to also pace Howland (11-10), while Andy Zigmont added a double, two singles and one RBI, Joe Aulizia a triple and double and Eric Jones two singles.
Dan Fortney hit a double and single while Jim Armeni and Brandon Holland had two RBIs each for Salem (8-10).
Monday Struthers 10, Campbell 6
STRUTHERS — Mike Vitucci’s three hits included a double for the Wildcats (12-10).
Winning pitcher Gary Yemma’s two hits included a double and drove in two runs.
For the Red Devils (10-8), Juan Miranda tripled and Tom Hofus and Dan Sacui each had two hits.
