Apartment fire put out

YOUNGSTOWN — A maintenance man at an apartment complex at 2639 Tyrell Ave. used a dry chemical extinguisher Monday afternoon to put out a kitchen fire before firefighters arrived, reports show. The fire extended from the stove to kitchen cabinets.

The tenant said she had a pan on the stove and was distracted by her newborn baby. When she returned, fire was coming from the pan. No injuries were reported. Damage was set at $3,000.

No charge filed in theft

YOUNGSTOWN — Summit Academy, a junior high school on Oak Street, chose not to pursue a theft charge against a pupil who stole $130, but instead advise the boy’s probation officer at the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center about the matter, police said.

A secretary noticed the money missing from a cabinet near her desk Monday and had the suspect followed when he asked to go to a restroom. The cash was found behind a toilet. The boy, no age given, confessed taking the money.

Pandering brings prison

WARREN – A 28-year-old former Leavittsburg man was sentenced Tuesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to two years in prison on six counts of pandering obscenities involving minors. Mark St. John, who has been living in Niles, pleaded guilty April 2 to the charges after an 18-month investigation by Warren Township police.

He was sentenced by Judge Andrew Logan, who also ordered St. John to register as a sex offender. The charges stem from him having photographs of underage children in sexual acts.

Utilities cut at Lloyd

AUSTINTOWN — A custodian reported that utility lines from Armstrong Cable Services and AT T Ohio were cut under a classroom trailer at Lloyd Elementary, 5705 Norquest Blvd., over the weekend.

The custodian told Austintown police Monday he believes the damage is part of an ongoing problem he has observed with juveniles going under the trailers on nights and weekends to consume alcohol.

Threat in Austintown

AUSTINTOWN — The mother of a 13-year-old seventh- grader at Austintown Middle School told police Monday that a 12-year-old girl at school had threatened to kill her daughter in a written note. The letter, which was obtained from a third girl, was turned over to the school principal and later given to a detective for further investigation.

Items taken from trucks

AUSTINTOWN — Argo Contracting, 5752 W. Webb Road, reported that truck and compressor batteries and music CDs were stolen from several company trucks parked at the business Sunday or Monday. Six truck batteries, four compressor batteries and about 200 CDs were taken from vehicles parked in a fenced-in area.

Tobacco store break-in

AUSTINTOWN — Police are investigating a break-in at Smoker Friendly, 1643 S. Raccoon Road, Monday morning in which someone threw a brick through the door and took an unknown number of cigarette rolling tubes.

Police responded to the store at 1:32 a.m. because the break-in triggered a burglar alarm.

Cleanup in Hartford

HARTFORD — Hartford Township will have is annual spring cleanup for township residents only from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 17, or until containers at the township center are filled. Tires, water heaters, stoves, washers, dryers, lead-acid batteries, refrigerators and other appliances will be accepted. No paints, oils or liquid chemicals will be taken.
