McDonald pulls even in ITCL Tier 2 with 12-2 victory over Lowellville


Springfield shut down Lisbon to improve to 10-1 in Tier One.

STRUTHERS — Anthony Raschilla pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and four walks to help the McDonald High baseball team beat Lowellville 12-2 Monday and pull into a tie for the lead in the Inter Tri-County League Tier Two standings.

McDonald (14-4, 11-2 ITCL) will play host to the Rockets (11-2 ITCL) today to decide the conference crown.

Mike Gatta and Alex Baker each had three hits, while Nick Gatta and Anthony Fossaceca each had two to lead the Blue Devils.

Raschilla and Bill Lowry each added two RBIs.

Leetonia 10, Jackson-Milton 0

LEETONIA — Ryan Gruszecki pitched a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts and no walks for Leetonia.

Gruszecki also had two singles and two RBIs, Josh Selway a triple and two RBIs and Jake Kruegel a double, single and one RBI to key Leetonia (10-7, 7-4 ITCL Tier Two).

J-M is 1-14 and 1-10 ITCL Tier Two.

Western Reserve 12, Sebring 7

SEBRING — The Blue Devils (10-8, 8-4), behind 7-6, scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning. Nick Timko went 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBI for Western Reserve. Devin Weekly hit a pair of doubles for the Trojans (11-10, 7-4).

Springfield 11, Lisbon 0

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Starting pitcher Todd Kibby and fifth-inning reliever Jake Wetzel combined to pitch a three-hitter.

Kibby (5-1) had seven strikeouts and also rapped three singles and had two RBIs to lead Springfield (17-5, 10-1 ITCL Tier One).

Matt Semach added two singles and two RBIs and Ronnie Bobo two singles and one RBI.

Russell McCullough had two singles for Lisbon (5-13, 5-8).

Mineral Ridge 7, South Range 7

MINERAL RIDGE — The game was suspended because of darkness after eight innings and will be completed before today’s game at South Range’s ballpark.

Dominic Armeni’s RBI single helped the Rams rally from a 5-3 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Jack Dawson’s base hit in the eighth inning put the Raiders ahead, 7-5. An RBI single by Ryan Anderson and a wild pitch allowed the Rams to tie.

Anderson’s two hits included a double. Armeni also had two hits

For the Raiders, Joel Melnick had three hits and Isaac Melnick two.

Salem 6, Beaver Local 4

SALEM — Zac O’Brien went 2-for-4 with three runs, while Chip Hank added two hits and two RBIs for Salem (8-9).

Kelly Emmerling went 3-for-4 with two runs and Travis Lynch added two hits for Beaver Local (12-10).

Howland 4, Niles 0

NILES — Andy Zigmont scattered six hits with five strikeouts for the victory in the Metro Athletic Conference contest. The Tigers scored two runs in the third inning and two in the fifth. Evan Bollinger hit a double for the Red Dragons.

Girard 7, Brookfield 6

GIRARD — Anthony Guerrieri had two hits, including a homer, and two RBIs to lead Girard (14-8, 10-3 TAC) in a slugfest that featured 19 hits and three homers.

Chris Weibel added two hits and two RBIs for the Indians, who took a 7-4 lead after three innings. Aaron Jennings also homered and Larry Goist had two RBIs. The Indians trail Hubbard and Champion in the league race.

Pat Mulligan had three hits, including a homer, for Brookfield. Ryan Miller and Bill Swanson each added two hits.

Mathews 7, LaBrae 3

VIENNA — John Scudier had a double, single and three RBIs and Luke Weymer a double, single and two RBIs to lead Mathews.

Phil Ciprian and Jake Swank added two singles each for the Mustangs (14-3-1).

Luke Weymer (4-1) got the mound win in relief.

For LaBrae (5-10), Nate Dugan had two singles.

Youngstown Christian 9, Canton Heritage Christian 6

YOUNGSTOWN — The Eagles (8-6) built a 5-4 lead by the end of the third inning, then scored two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth at Pemberton Park. Ed Gonda (5-3), the winning pitcher, hit two singles, drove in two runs, scored twice and stole two bases. Tim Bridenstein hit a double, two singles and scored twice. Josh Bell hit a triple, single and scored once. Joseph Echevestre hit a pair of singles. Gonda allowed only two hits. He faced 20 batters and struck out 11.

Norton 6, Southeast 2

NORTON — Norton (12-5) scored two runs in the third inning and two in the fifth and the Pirates (6-13) couldn’t make up the difference. Anthony Pennington hit a triple and Greg Lemley a double for Southeast. Justin Emerick and Mitch White hit a pair of singles apiece for the Panthers.
