Amish man injured in hit-and-run incident
MERCER, Pa. — An Amish man from Crawford County is in stable condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown on Monday as Pennsylvania State Police look for the hit-and-run driver who knocked him 50 feet away from his buggy.
The man, Erven A. Byler, 22, of 5824 Pine Road, Hartstown, was flown to the hospital after the accident.
He was injured after his horse-drawn buggy was struck from behind on Pa. Route 358 just east of Huey Road in Perry Township, Mercer County, at 12:50 a.m. Monday. The wreck killed Byler’s horse, said state police in Mercer.
Police are asking people to be on the lookout for a car with severe front-end damage and possible side and windshield damage.

One killed, one hurt in single-car accident
FOWLER — A 21-year-old Orwell woman was killed and her 21-year-old passenger was injured in a single-car accident on state Route 193 (Youngstown-Kingsville Road) at 6:04 p.m. Monday.
The driver, Christi R. Novicki, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Heather R. Hileman, also of Orwell, the front-seat passenger, was injured and taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where she remained late Monday. The Ohio State Highway Patrol post in Southington said her injuries were moderate.
The OSP reported the accident occurred just north of Cadwallader-Sonk Road when the vehicle, a 1994 Ford Tempo, traveling north, went off the right side of the road and into a ditch. The vehicle then struck a drainage culvert and a utility pole.
Troopers said both women were using their automatic shoulder safety belt but not the manual lap safety belt. The crash remains under investigation.
Sobriety checkpoint planned for Saturday
YOUNGSTOWN — A sobriety checkpoint will be set up in Mahoning County from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday. The exact location was not announced. Members of the Mahoning County Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force will target impaired drivers in an effort to keep the roads safe by reducing alcohol and drug-related crashes.
The task force encourages responsible drinking and the use of sober designated drivers.
