AMERICAN LEAGUE
Yankees 8, Mariners 2
NEW YORK — Derek Jeter had four hits and the New York Yankees got consecutive homers from Melky Cabrera and Robinson Cano during a six-run outburst, beating the slumping Mariners to finish a lopsided three-game sweep. Just called up from the minors, Darrell Rasner pitched six comfortable innings and the sweet-swinging Yankees roughed up an ineffective Carlos Silva (3-1). New York outscored the Mariners 19-4 in the series, immediately after getting swept three games at home by the Detroit Tigers.
Red Sox 7, Rays 3
BOSTON — Kevin Youkilis had four RBIs and Jon Lester pitched six innings to lift Boston over Tampa Bay, spoiling the return of Rays ace Scott Kazmir. After being swept for the first time in franchise history by Tampa Bay last weekend, the Red Sox returned the favor and outscored the Rays in the series 26-10. None of the Tampa Bay starters in the three-game series made it out of the fourth inning. Lester (2-2) allowed a run and four hits with three walks. Jonathan Papelbon got the final four outs to record his ninth save in nine chances for Boston.
Twins 7, Tigers 6
MINNEAPOLIS — Joe Mauer capped a Minnesota rally from a six-run, first-inning deficit, slapping a two-run single up the middle in the seventh to lift the Twins past the Tigers. A two-out error in the inning by third baseman Carlos Guillen, who let a routine groundball hit by Nick Punto roll off his glove and through his legs, set up a four-run surge and ruined a strong start by Kenny Rogers. Zach Miner (1-2) relieved and gave up an RBI single to Carlos Gomez and an RBI double to Brendan Harris. Then Bobby Seay came in and served up Mauer’s go-ahead hit. Matt Guerrier (2-1) earned the victory with two scoreless innings in relief.
Blue Jays 4, White Sox 3
TORONTO — Roy Halladay won for the first time in four starts, Matt Stairs scored twice and drove in two runs and Toronto handed Chicago its season-high fifth straight loss. Halladay (3-4) had thrown complete games in his previous four starts, but lost the last three. He lasted 71‚Ñ3 innings in this one, giving up three runs — one earned — and three hits. Halladay walked none and struck out seven. Toronto has won a season-high four straight after losing eight of nine.
Angels 6, Orioles 5
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Gary Matthews Jr. and Torii Hunter homered in the first inning and Los Angeles beat Baltimore despite a poor outing by still-unbeaten Joe Saunders. Saunders (6-0) threw 85 pitches over five innings in the shortest of his seven starts. The left-hander allowed four runs and a career-high 12 hits, struck out one and walked none.
Athletics 3, Rangers 1
OAKLAND, Calif. — Jack Cust’s two-run homer in the seventh inning helped Oakland end the Rangers’ four-game winning streak. Santiago Casilla (1-0) threw a scoreless seventh for the win, and has yet to allow a run in his 161‚Ñ3 innings.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Astros 8, Brewers 6
HOUSTON — Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th to lead the Astros. Pence’s home run to left field scored Lance Berkman and completed Houston’s comeback for its third straight win.
Marlins 10, Padres 3
MIAMI — Greg Maddux failed in his fourth bid to reach 350 victories, when he was outpitched by young Andrew Miller in a loss to Florida. Maddux (2-3) twice failed to hold a lead, and he allowed 11 hits and five runs, four earned, in 52‚Ñ3 innings. Miller (2-2) earned his seventh career win with his best performance since joining the Marlins in the offseason trade that sent Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera to Detroit. The left-hander allowed four hits and two runs in a season-high six innings.
Phillies 6, Giants 5
PHILADELPHIA — Pat Burrell had two doubles and two RBIs to lead the Phillies past the Giants for manager Charlie Manuel’s 500th career victory. Shane Victorino had two hits and Carlos Ruiz homered for the Phillies. Philadelphia won in the bottom of the ninth when second baseman Eugenio Velez couldn’t handle Geoff Jenkins’ sharp grounder, allowing Ryan Howard to score from second. Brad Lidge (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.
Braves 14, Reds 7
ATLANTA — Chipper Jones drove in five runs and the Atlanta Braves scored seven runs in the second inning and beat the Reds to complete a three-game sweep. Jones hit his ninth homer — a three-run shot off Bronson Arroyo in the seven-run second. Kelly Johnson was 4-for-6 and Mark Kotsay was 3-for-4 with a homer.
Rockies 7, Dodgers 2
DENVER — Aaron Cook gave the Rockies the strong outing they needed, Matt Holliday had two hits and two RBIs and the Rockies beat the Dodgers to end a four-game losing streak. It was the fifth time Cook (5-1) stopped a Rockies’ losing streak, and for the third straight start he ended a four-game losing streak.
Mets 5, Diamondbacks 2
PHOENIX — First baseman Conor Jackson’s ninth inning throwing error allowed Carlos Beltran to score the go-ahead run from second and the Mets went on to beat the Diamondbacks. The Mets won at Arizona for the 15th time in 17 tries and handed the Diamondbacks’ just their second series loss of the season. The only other series Arizona lost was its season-opening three-game set at Cincinnati.
